TICKET SALES during the Manny Pacquiao-Jorge Solis bout at the Alamodome in San Antonio was the second largest in the city and the third biggest event in Texas boxing history.
This was revealed by John Whisler in his column published at the San Antonio Express News Sunday. He said ticket sales reached a shade below $ 1.3 million.
Whisler also wrote that only the 1993 fight between Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker and the 1999 duel between Oscar De La Hoya and Patrick Charpentier in the border town of El Paso were the only ones to surpass the Pacquiao headliner.
He said that the Chavez-Whitaker bout sold $ 6.8 million tickets to 60,000 fans at the Alamodome, while the De La Hoya-Charpentier scuffle had $ 2.8 million sales and a crowd of 45,000 at Sun Bowl.
The Blaze of Glory card also featured two other world title fights and a couple of topnotch prot?g?s.
The Top Rank, which staged the Pacquiao-Solis showdown, said 14,793 showed up at the Alamodome which observers said boxing is back on its feet in San Antonio, which has a rich boxing tradition.
“Thanks to Manny Pacquiao, Jorge Arce and a slender southpaw, a star-in-the-making named Cristian Mijares, bigtime boxing is back in San Antonio,” said Whisler, noting that the last time a huge card was held at the Alamodome last November, it turned out to be a stinker even though the main event featured Evander Holyfield.
