There’s one fighter who was presumably not impressed with Gennady Golovkin’s (32-0, 29KOs) eleven roound destruction of Martin Murray yesterday.
Confident he can whoop Golovkin, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32KOs) wants the WBA/WBO middleweight champ to bolt eight pounds north to super middleweight so they can rumble with each other at 168 lbs.
Chavez Jr believes that aside from Golovkin’s punching power, there’s little special about him.
… And that’s not all. Julio is apparently willing to put his money where his mouth is.
According to BoxingScene.com, Chavez Jr insists he’s willing to bet $1 Million USD he would knockout the fighter dubbed ‘Triple G.’
Is Julio Cesar Chavez Jr really serious? That’s 15,028,550 Mexican pesos.
Perhaps he saw something in Gennady’s defense last night he believes he can expose?
Such wagers are uncommon is boxing but similar bets have been made.
For instance, in 2003 Bernard Hopkins bet opponent William Joppy $50,000 that he would knockout the latter. Joppy only had to put up $25,000 and took the bet. Hopkins dominated the fight but a resilient Joppy hung on to lose a wide decision.
After the fight, Hopkins said, “He earned that $50,000.”
And two years prior to the Joppy fight, Hopkins, a +350 underdog, bet $100,000 on himself just before stepping into the ring to knockout Felix Trinidad in their middleweight title unification superfight.
On April 18, Chavez Jr faces Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KO), a fighter he insists is bigger and stronger than Golovkin.
