Well, anything is possible.
For a brief time last November, undefeated WBA super lightweight champion Jessie Vargas (26-0, 9KOs) may have been the frontrunner to face Manny Pacquiao this spring. However, once Mayweather vs Pacquiao talks got serious, Jessie took a backseat to Floyd.
And although Pacquiao has recently reached out to Amir Khan as a fall-back option in case Mayweather vs Pacquiao talks fizzle, Team Vargas is keeping its proverbial ‘hat in the ring’ as well.
Vargas, now the likely fall-back to the first fall-back (Amir Khan), recently told BoxingScene that his manager was still trying to make Pacquiao vs Vargas a possibility in May.
A longshot to fight Pacquiao next, Vargas has been featured on Manny’s last two undercards, defeating a southpaw both times.
Coincidence?
Pacquiao, of course, is a southpaw and they are not easy to find.
Prior to facing Manny Pacquiao the first time, Tim Bradley was featured on the Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 undercard as well, and against a southpaw (Joel Casamayor).
Is Vargas, who is promoted by Top Rank, being groomed for Pacquiao?
If Manny defeats Floyd and/or Khan, and Vargas remains unblemished, look for Jessie’s name to be mentioned as a strong possible opponent for the Filipino slugger.
