Sonsona taps controversial conditioning coach

MARVIN Sonsona gets a huge boost in preparation for his next fight as his handlers acquire the services of strength and conditioning coach Angel Heredia.

?Our intention for Sonsona is for him to develop his body with muscle. Once his training development is working then we will announce later the date (of his fight),? Sonsona?s promoter Sammy Gello-ani told Sun.Star Cebu.

Heredia, also known as Memo, is a controversial strength and conditioning coach, who had faced accusations of giving his athletes banned substances. He is known for the work he has done on Juan Manuel Marquez during the 41-year-old Mexican star?s knockout win over Manny Pacquiao in 2012.

Sonsona, the former World Boxing Organization (WBO) super flyweight champion, will be training in the US along with trainer Jun Agrabio and fellow former world champion Johnriel Casimero. The team will be leaving for the US on Feb. 6.

?I sent Casimero and his trainer Agrabio for Sonsona to have a companion in training but Casimero will benefit his exposure in training camp,? said Gello-ani.

Casimero is waiting for his shot at the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight belt. He will be challenging the winner of the fight between current titleholder Amnat Ruenroeng and Chinese star Zou Shiming in March.

Sonsona, on the other hand, is in brink of another title shot. He is rated No. 2 in the World Boxing Council (WBC), No. 5 in the World Boxing Association (WBA), No. 4 in the IBF and No. 12 in the WBO.

Sonsona fought sporadically following his fourth-round knockout loss to Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in 2010. He fought once each from 2011 to 2013.

Last year, he logged two huge wins that placed him back into the title picture. He scored a third round knockout over former world champion Akifumi Shimoda and then avenged his loss to Vazquez with a split decision win.
