If there’s been a swerve attempt this weekend, we’ll know tonight. As the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots lace up their cleats and deflate some balls for Super Bowl XLIX, the boxing world is wondering something else: are we finally going to see our Super Bowl, Floyd Mayweather vs Manny Pacquiao?
There is some chatter out there that an announcement could be made tonight, perhaps in the form of a commercial, perhaps just online during the game, whatever, with the promoters using the mass attention of the biggest TV event of the year as a way to piggyback eyeballs for the fight that even the most casual of fight fans has been waiting to see since 2009.
Now, we don’t know that there will be an announcement made. But most of us are going to be watching the game tonight anyway, so why not make a BLH event of it, too? Come, join us, as you are lonely and not at a Big Game Party, perhaps fighting for control of the television as your spouse may prefer the Puppy Bowl (honestly, who doesn’t?), or your kids may want to watch The Muppet Babies on VHS, or whatever kids watch now. Tell them, “Everyone, there might be a big announcement for a different sport tonight. Sorry.” Because our lives revolve around sports.
Everything starts at 6:30 pm EST on NBC, with live streams available from the NBC Sports web site. We can all discuss the Big Game, as well as make great comments like, “$4.5 million for that Doritos commercial?” or get all teary-eyed at patriotic Budweiser commercials or whatever.
