Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo welcomed warmly on Tuesday the Filipino boxing idol Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao by personally greeting him at the foyer of Malacanang presidential palace’s Rizal Hall.
“The people’s champion has once again brought victory and pride to the nation. His physical strength is matched by a tenacious will to uplift his countrymen with every win,” President Arroyo said.
“We welcome him home as the people’s idol and this generation’s shining light,” she said.
Unlike his past visits to the Palace, Pacquiao’s meeting with the President on Tuesday was without much pomp and fanfare. Pacquiao was accompanied by wife Jinky and officials of the city of Manila.
Arroyo gave a gift to Pacquiao and presented him with a cake with boxing gloves.
Filipino boxing champion Pacquiao flew home Tuesday morning after his knockout victory over Mexican fighter Jorge Solis Saturday night in San Antonio, Texas.
