Canoy bows to Tomongdan for 1st setback

JOEY Canoy suffered the first setback of his young promising career after losing to Jerry Tomongdan on the scorecards.

Two judges had Tomongdan winning with scores of 98-92 and 97-93, while the other judge scored it 95-95 for the majority decision win last Monday night at the Bgy. Tamlon Gym in Cagayan de Oro.

The 21-year-old Tomongdan improved to 16-5-2 with eight knockouts and snagged the vacant Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) mini-flyweight belt. Canoy, 21, suffered his first career defeat and dropped down to 8-1-1 with three knockouts.

Renoel Pael, Canoy?s teammate at the Flores Boxing Gym in Mandaue City, had an early scare but rallied to stop journeyman Nikong Calamba for the vacant Asia Boxing Federation (ABF) super bantamweight strap.

Calamba caught and dropped Pael in the third round. Pael, however, survived and knocked down Calamba in the fifth. The fight continued for two more rounds but Calamba didn?t come out to fight in the eighth round.

The 24-year-old Pael is now 16-1-1 with seven knockouts, while Calamba dropped to 6-19-3 with three knockouts.
