Rachel Marcial Donaire has shared via Facebook her recent blog entry about Nonito Donaire?s sixth-round knockout loss to Nicholas Walters in October. It?s extremely humanizing.
Her image needs that sometimes, even at home in the Bay Area but primarily in the Philippines.
She has often been vilified as the harpy who drove a wedge between the then-flyweight champion and his trainer-father in 2008. They never let her forget that in their view he at least was born a Filipino but to them she?s pretty much an American, no matter how devoted she feels to her family’s roots in the Philippines.
Although Nonito, too, has been reviled by tradition-minded Filipinos blaming him for his family difficulties,he?s the nice one. His boxing and disposition give him an upside compared to Rachel?s steelier image.
She says as much in the blog entry, titled ?Night of a Knockout,? although it?s mostly about the horror of watching her husband come undone against a larger man, all the while trying to soothe her little son and worrying about how the trauma might affect her second son on the way.
And that was before the public?s usual cascade of insults assaulted her.
?I laughed at the comments I saw, that?d I?d be leaving my husband soon or that they wanted to see me cry. How sad these people?s lives that they need to focus solely on my expression and state of mind. And let me leave that to say?nothing. Keyboard warriors have always been just that. Sad.?
She?s not laughing inside. She?s not impervious, and who can blame her for saying so? She?s been taking that kind of abuse for more than six years now.
