BERNABE Concepcion of the Philippines won his showdown over Benjamin Flores, but Filipino-American Brian Viloria failed his bid to capture the WBC light flyweight crown when he lost to Edgar Sosa of Mexico via a majority decision Saturday in San Antonio, Texas.
Both encounters served as supporting bouts of the card dubbed “Blaze of Glory” headlined by Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao and Jorge Solis.
Concepcion was in control of the action most of the way and boxed his way on scores of 97-93 on two scorcards of two judges and 96-94 on the third. Concepcion, who is managed by Aljoe Jaro in partnership with American Dante Ortiz.
Viloria, who had briefly held the WBC light flyweight title, was hoping to regain the crown he lost to Omar Ni?o also of Mexico.
But Viloria, after starting strong, faded in the later rounds to lose the fight against the aggressive Sosa. Viloria even came close of being stopped in the final two rounds when Sosa launched an all-out attack.
Judges Max de Luca and Jesses Reyes each scored it 115-113 for Sosa, while Burt Clements had it a 114-114 draw, the reason for the majority decision. Both Viloria and Sosa’s faces were swollen after the fight. (CRAM)
