SAN ANTONIO—I shook the hand of the Great Man, Emmanuel D. Pacquaio, Friday just before he weighed in at a fit and ready 128 ? pounds for his WBC International super featherweight title bout against Jorge Solis. As I walked over to Pacman and his entourage, who were surrounded by TV cameras from four different Filpino TV networks or stations, a Pacman aide recognized me and spoke in Tagalog to Pacman.

The assistant then handed a blue and yellow hat which read “Pacquaio Congressman” and carried the name of his political party, Kampi. I also spoke briefly with mystery man Michael Koncz but I did not get the chance to ask if he is still sleeping on the floor next to Pacman’s bed every night.
In related news, I spoke minutes before the weigh-in at the Alamodome with head Pacman trainer Freddie Roach. The consummate professional, Roach said he would arrive here late tonight and would be in charge of the Filpino icon’s corner. Promoter Bob Arum had said Roach would be a no show. Wishful thinking, Bobalu?
Solis made 130 ? on his first try on the scales, dropped his skivvies and made 130 ?, The Mexican fighter then went to lose that last quarter pound. While Solis worked, Pacman was having a feast behind the weigh-in stage. Manny was rehydrating with Gatorade and juices and eating chicken, steak and fruit including watermelon.
“This guy is like an Elvis of boxing,” former world champ and SA resident Jesse James Leija said. “I am sure he can be in Congress and also fight. He’s like Oscar De La Hoya that way.
