Op-Ed: Mayweather’s last 2 fights on Showtime could be against Pacquiao

Floyd Mayweather has two more fights left in his six-fight contract with giant TV network CBS/Showtime and these remaining fights could be against Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao.

No less than the CEO of CBS/Showtime Leslie Moonves has reportedly patched up his differences with Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum, who recently spoke of Moonves’ effort to put the two sides on the negotiating table. Pacquiao’s convincing victory over Chris Algieri Saturday in Macau, China, had fight fans clamoring for the two elite fighters to face each other in the ring. After his rematch with Marcos Maidana last May, Mayweather said Pacquiao has to prove his worth against Algieri and if he beats the undefeated American from Huntington, New York, the talks can continue. Let him beat Algieri, then we’ll talk.said Mayweather. Now that Pacquiao has scored six knockdowns that led to a convincing unanimous verdict, fight fans are eager to hear what Mayweather has to say. Arum said he is willing to give Mayweather a little time while he explores the scenarios that are necessary to get the negotiations moving.. Ronnie Nathanielz writes on Philboxing: “In a telephone conversation with the Manila Standard/Viva Sports hours before he was scheduled to return to the US from Macau, Arum said he ?hopes to make the Mayweather fight? and is ready ?to give him ( Mayweather) a little time? to respond Earlier, Arum had reportedly spoken to Moonves after Pacquiao’s “trainer Freddie Roach got them together after talking to the owner of a pizza shop that Moonves frequents in Los Angeles,” said Kevin Iole of Yahoo. Seemingly, Arum wants to fast track the talks to give the promoters more time to to sell the fight. “Enough is enough,” said Arum. “The time is now, and there must be no more excuses.” Arum told The Telegraph that Mayweather-Pacquiao would be in June 2015 if it goes ahead.

But the management of both networks could just visit their archives to find a similar arrangement in the past involving the two networks co-promoting a blockbuster boxing event which was the fight between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis that took place in Memphis, Tennessee in 2002. Since a rematch is likely inevitable, Mayweather’s last two of his six-fight contract with Showtime will have him facing Pacquiao twice. Meanwhile fight fans are spending sleepless nights waiting for Mayweather’s reaction to Pacquiao’s convincing win over Algieri and his promise to resume talks if Pacquiao is victorious.
