Smart offers Pacquiao fight broadcast

INFORMATION technology has made it possible for the entire nation to view at real time and at lower cost boxing hero Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Jorge Solis on Sunday, April 15.

According to Mon Isberto, spokesperson of the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), PLDT will provide a free, exclusive and uninterrupted broadcast of the “Blaze of Glory” fight to subscribers of Smart Telecom 3G and mobile television, PLDT myDSL and SmartBro.

“This is the first time we are giving this service. We are experimenting on this,” he said in an interview.

Any Smart subscriber with a 3G handset within Smart’s coverage area could view the bout by logging on to the WAP site, wap.smart.com.ph and clicking on the link to the video stream.

The cost of the content is free. However, the regular streaming cost of P15 per 30 minutes still applies.

Isberto said PLDT myDSL Internet owners have to register at www.mypad.net to get their access pins.

SmartBro computer station and subscribers of good standing will receive a URL via callout or SMS.

Once the URL has been accessed, the subscriber will be asked to enter account details before viewing the fight.

Mobile TV

Meanwhile, MediaQuest subsidiary National Broadcasting Corp. (NBC) will be opening a temporary channel for subscribers with mobile TV-capable phones.

Mobile TV allows viewers to have access to TV any time, anywhere using digital video broadcasting-handheld (DVBH)-capable mobile phones.

Smart, in partnership with MediaQuest, has already begun its mobile TV test broadcast offering nine channels, including CNN, BBC World, among others. (JBN)
