Despite predictions that Chris Algieri won’t last the distance against veteran boxing star Manny Pacquiao when they face each other in the ring on Nov. 22, the unbeaten champion could still pull an upset if he knows how to use his own skill and talent.
Boxers follow certain basic moves as they engage their opponents in the ring but each one has his own unique talent that he alone can use effectively to his advantage. In the case of Algieri, he knows and boxing observers know that he has a superior jab that could neutralize Pacquiao, who is known for his speed and power. It is unthinkable that Algieri’s camp won’t use his superior jab to his advantage. A plan or strategy could be devised that will revolve around the proper and effective usage of his jabs. Veteran trainer Freddie Roach has acknowledged that jabs ? when used effectively ? can win a fight. Roach cited the case of Larry Holmes and Virgil Hill who won fights during their boxing careers with effective use of their jabs. The Hall of Fame trainer also acknowledged that the unbeaten champion has a great jab and he already has a plan in place to neutralize Algieri’s jabs. “He has a great jab. The jab is the best punch in boxing ? guys like Virgil Hill and Larry Holmes won world titles with the jab, so it?s something we really have to concentrate on,” Roach said. “We have to take that jab away from him and we have a game plan on how to do that and we are working on that every day and that?s why Postol was brought in, because he has a very good jab like Algieri. Now, he is a little bit taller than Algieri and has a longer reach but it gives a good idea about what to expect in the fight,” added Roach, who addressed the media during the press conference in General Santos City in the Philippines over the weekend.

If Algieri can execute accurate jabs, it would certainly get Pacquiao out of his perimeter. Contrary to naysayer’s predictions, Algieri has a fair chance of beating Pacquiao primarily because of his superior reach and height which he can use to his advantage. Roach is aware that Algieri will use his height and size advantage which is expected and his trainer must have already devised a plan to maximize Algieri’s advantages. But Algieri’s best option is still his superior jabs which could give Pacquiao some troubles if executed with great accuracy. Hopefully his handlers would realize the importance of also enhancing Algieri’s use of his jabs as it could be his key to a possible upset.
