Gejon Dominates Thai for Lopsided Win By Rico Navarro PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Mar 2007 Manila – Eriberto "Yuka" Gejon relied on his superior skills to score a lopsided unanimous decision win over a tough Visan Sor Suchanya of Thailand Saturday night at the Rambulan Sa Sulaiman at the Rajah Sulaiman Park in Manila. Judges Romy Yulo and Cris Odulio both scored the bout 100-91 for Gejon, while Henry Verniz scored the bout 100-90, giving the Wakee Salud boxer a virtual shut-out win. Although the scores indicate that it was a one-sided affair, Gejon had to overcome a game and stubborn Suchanya who was both tough to hit and put away. Suchanya took in every punch that Gejon threw and managed to land a few punches in between exchanges. Gejon had difficulty scoring through Suchanya's peek-a-boo defense in the early going, but finally found his mark when his right uppercuts started to land consistently. Each time Suchanya pressed the action and get up close, Gejon used a right uppercut to open up the Thai's defense and stop him on his tracks. And when both were fighting at a distance, the taller Gejon used his jab-straight combinations and lateral movement to keep Suchanya at bay. All ten rounds were duplicates of each other, with Gejon controlling the fight with his jab, Suchanya wanting to turn the fight into a slugfest by coming in close, and Gejon using his uppercut to stop any of the Thai's attacks. The Cebu delegation of the Wakee Salud Stable however, went home with some bad news as two of their young upstarts who were being groomed to follow in Gejon's footsteps lost to veterans in the supporting main events. Apol Suico lost by technical knockout in the second round to Danilo Lerio in a scheduled ten-rounder. Boogie Delada also lost by TKO to Danilo Pe?a in the fifth round. Lerio dominated the fight from the start and knocked Suico down right in the first round. Suico went down again twice in the second round with Ferdie Estrella waving the fight off after a groggy and wobbly Suico was in no condition to continue. Delada looked like a boy lost in the woods as he couldn't overcome the wild and wooly style of Pe?a who took the fight to Delada in a clinch-filled bout that looked like a wrestling match. Pe?a charged at Delada on every opportunity, throwing bombs from every angle, knocking him down three times before referee Eddie Nobleza called a halt to the fight. In other bouts involving Wakee Salud Stable boxers, Roel Laguna defeated Mervin Batolina by TKO in the eighth round. Darryl Pucdol defeated by Rocky Batol-Batol by split decision. Gedion Amba lost by majority decision to Armando Casa. In the special attraction featuring ladies boxing, Gretchen Abaniel defeated Baina Londo by unanimous decision. The other bouts saw Rocky Marcial recover from a knockdown to score a one-punch knockout over Michael Anas in the first round. Vicente Palicte defeated Marc Polgahe, and Joel Rafols beat Roel Lagonero. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Rico Navarro. |
