Mepranum faces Thai tonight in comeback bid By Edwin G. Espejo PhilBoxing.com Sat, 22 Feb 2014 GENERAL SANTOS CITY (February 22) - Former world rated and title campaigner Richie Mepranum is making a comeback tonight when he fights Phupha Por Nobnom of Thailand over 10 rounds at the Oval Plaza Covered Court. Mepranum, who only fought once since losing to Hernan Marquez in 2012 in Mexico, is now back in Maasim, Sarangani under the folds of Mayor Jojo Lopez. He has not fought before his town mates since 2008 is coming off a 7-month layoff. His last fight was in July last year when he outpointed Jessie Tuyor in Iligan City. The 26-year old slick boxer fought thrice in the undercard of Manny Pacquiao?s fights in the US where he made good account of himself, winning all those fights. In 2010, he fought for the vacant World Boxing Organization flyweight title against Julio Cesar Miranda but lost via TKO in 5 rounds in Mexico. His manager, Mayor Jojo Lopez, blamed lack of preparation. Mepranum promised to make a good showing tonight against his Thai opponent. Mepranum came in at 115 pounds at yesterday?s weighed in while Phupha was at 112. Phupha is a hard puncher winning 9 of his 10 victories via knockout. But the Thai has 8 losses, The card is promoted by JerryPens Promotion Inc and is part of the 25th Kalilangan activities. General Santos is also marking the 75th anniversary of the arrival of settlers who landed in the shores of Dadiangas in 1939. The bouts will be covered by Solar Sports and will be aired next week, according to Gerry Pe?alosa who owns JerryPens Promotion. Pe?alsoa is married to Goody Llido whose grandfather Leon Llido was among the engineers brought by the late General Paulino Santos when they arrived here. four of them by stoppages. The Thai last fought in 2012 in Cebu City, losing by 2nd round knockout to Albert Pagara. In the main supporting bout, local boy Jetly Purisima of Golingan Stable battles Jerson Luzarito of Butuan City over 10 rounds. Others seeing action are Jilbert Gomera who will face Ruben Baldoz over 6 rounds, Ronnie Tanallon who will slug it out with Joven Torres, Engelbert Moraldo versus Randy Gomez and William Ugbaniel against Rogen Flores.
