Professional Ring Officials Hold Boxing Seminar in Makati By Salvador Lopez PhilBoxing.com Sat, 05 May 2012 The Association of Philippine Professional Boxing Ring Officials (APPBRO) ? Luzon Chapter, Inc. successfully staged its first ever boxing seminar last Sunday, April 29, at the Lourdes Suites, Makati City. The event was held pursuant to the organization?s mission of raising up the quality of boxing officiating in the Philippines such that the country will be known as a constant source of outstanding and world class referees and judges. The program started with an inspirational speech from the association?s president, Silvestre Abainza, who shared his insights how he developed from a neophyte referee to his present status as an international referee and judge. This writer then explained the formation of the association as a juridical entity in order to function as an active organization. Afterwards, boxing judge Elmer Lopez discussed to the audience the mission and vision of the association showing the steps of its creation and development. He introduced the association in the business perspective as a service organization wherein its customers would primarily be the boxers, the promoters and managers, the sanctioning body (Games and Amusements Board) and to the general public. He finished his presentation with a motto known as the ?5Ps?: ?Proper preparation promotes perfect performance?. The morning?s program culminated with a very informative presentation by boxing judge Engr. Greg Ortega on the history of boxing where he made the seminar participants walked through the developments of boxing from its very brutal version during the ancient Greek and Roman civilisations to the ?bare knuckle? era in the 1700s and up to its modern form. The highlights of the program came in the afternoon when Atty. Danrex Tapdasan and Referee Silvestre Abainza made their presentations on the fundamentals of judging and refereeing, respectively. In his presentation, Atty. Dapdasan stressed the role of a boxing judge in the career of a boxer and emphasized that judges should exercise fairness at all times, not being biased in favour of certain boxers or promoters. In one of the key points of his presentation, he echoed a renowned U.S. boxing judge by sharing that there are three types of ?10-9 round?: (1) close round; (2) moderate round; and (3) dominating round. Moreover, he mentioned that the most important element in judging is concentration. Referee Silvestre Abainza emphasized that the most important concern of a referee while atop the ring is safety of the boxers. He provided the participants insight on how to assess whether or not a boxer is no longer fit to continue such that a stoppage is necessary to prevent the boxer from sustaining serious injury. The program culminated with an open forum wherein some of the issues in judging and refereeing were discussed including a situation where a referee mistakenly ruled a knockdown against a boxer dominating the round such as the case in the fight between Manny Pacquiao against Shane Mosley. In general, the seminar is a success and the association, APPBRO plans to hold it very often in the future. Photo: International Referee Silvestre Abainza discussing the finer points of refereeing.
