MIJARES KEEPS IBF SUPERFLY TITLE IN DURANGO
By Jonathan Davis PhilBoxing.com Mon, 16 May 2011

Hours ago, IBF Super Flyweight Champion, Cristian "Diamante" Mijares won by unanimous decision over Carlos "Rapidito" Rueda in front of a highly partisan crowd, chanting, "durango" "durango" at the Palenque dela Feria Nacional in Durango, Mexico. After a feeling out 1st round, the Champion immediately put on the pressure on his Nicaraguan challenger by peppering him with jabs and fast combinations. Cristian Mijares was particularly merciless during mid ring exchanges, outpunching Carlos Rueda 5 to 1. The awkwardly slow and wild swinging Carlos Rueda used bull rushing tactics, leading with his head, but was a sucker for the Champion's counter right upper cuts that snapped his head time and again. In the sixth round, he got warned by Referee Jack Reiss for pulling down Cristian Mijares' head after a missed punch, that dropped the Champion to the canvas. Frustrated at his wasted motions, Carlos Rueda tried playing possum at times to lure the Champion to come in and ax him with a single blow, but the Champion was just too shifty and elusive to hit. And, each time Carlos Rueda stayed on the ropes, Cristian Mijares simply tore him apart with heavy artillery to the head and body.
Carlos Rueda made it close in the last two rounds as the Champion somewhat slowed down and started showboating to the crowd, but it was too little too late for the outclassed Challenger. Final scores were 120-108 from Judges Albert Bennet and Jonathan Davis, and 118-110 from Rubin Garcia. Fight Supervisor was IBF Director Dave McCullough.
