(Sept. 17, 2024) – Three days before his anticipated ring return, Mexican super middleweight star Jaime Munguia paid a special visit to more than 50 young boxers at Old School Boxing Gym in Phoenix, Arizona. Munguia gave out Top Rank merchandise, signed autographs, took photos, and shared inspirational stories from his decorated career. The Tijuana native is an 11-year pro and former WBO junior middleweight world champion. Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs), who will fight unbeaten contender Erik Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs) in the 12-round main event Friday evening at Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, returns to the Phoenix area following January's knockout win of British veteran John Ryder at Footprint Center. In May, he dropped a decision to countryman Canelo Alvarez in a bid for the undisputed title. Friday's co-feature will be an eight-round heavyweight showdown between Olympic silver medal standout Richard Torrez Jr. (10-0, 10 KOs) and Philadelphia-born veteran Joey Dawejko (28-11-4, 16 KOs). In the eight-round televised opener, undefeated junior welterweight Emiliano Fernando Vargas (11-0, 9 KOs) steps up in class against upset-minded Irishman Larry Fryers (13-6-1, 5 KOs) Munguia-Bazinyan, Torrez-Dawejko, and Vargas-Fryers will be broadcast live on ESPN, ESPN Deportes, and ESPN+ at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT. The ESPN+-streamed undercard begins at 5:50 p.m. ET/2:50 p.m. PT and includes a 10-round junior lightweight bout between unbeaten Filipino Charly Suarez (17-0, 9 KOs) and Texas-born puncher Jorge Castaneda (17-3, 13 KOs).
