SPORTSCLOPEDIA 42: MARK MAGSAYO'S LOSS TO BRANDON FIGUEROA COMPUBOX PUNCHSTATS

PhilBoxing.com

Brandon Figueroa (24-1-1, 18 KOs) won a twelve round unanimous decision over Mark Magsayo (24-2, 16 KOs) to seize the WBC interim featherweight world title.

* * *

In Friday’s weigh-in, Magsayo struggled to make weight, as he needed two hours to shed the excess weight to hit the 126-pound limit.

* * *

Figueroa usually averages 92 punches thrown per round. But in this fight, Magsayo was able to limit Figueroa to a lower 54 punches thrown per round per Compubox Punchstats.

* * *

Figueroa threw 60 more punches than Magsayo (593 to 653), but landed 3 fewer punches. Only three of the twelve rounds fought where the fighters were separated by a difference of more than 4 landed punches.

* * *

Here's the judges' scoring: Gary Ritter of Oklahoma (117-109), Fernando Villarreal of California (117-109) and Zachary Young of California (118-108).

* * *

Ritter and Villarreal scored nine rounds each for Figueroa, while Young scored 10 rounds for the Texas native. Young scored the final nine rounds in favor of Figueroa.

* * *

Referee Thomas Taylor deducted two points from Magsayo for excessive holding in the 8th and 11th round, and it made the scoring margin even wider as Figueroa dominated the Boholano fighter in the judges' scorecards.

* * *

“Thank you for everyone who supported! Me and my team will be back soon to give great fights to great boxing fans! Keep pushing keep fighting we are warriors!” Magsayo was quoted by Inquirer Sports.

* * *

The loss is the second straight defeat for Magsayo, who had won the WBC featherweight title last January 22, 2022 with a majority decision win over Gary Russell Jr. before losing the title to Rey Vargas by split decision on July 9, 2022.

* * *

Here's the Compubox Punchstats:
Total Punches (Landed/Thrown/ Percent)
Figueroa 176/653 (27%)
Magsayo 179/593 (30.2%)

* * *

Total Jabs (Landed/Thrown/ Percent)
Figueroa 15/125 (12%)
Magsayo 19/129 (14.7%)

* * *

Power Punches (Landed/Thrown/ Percent)
Figueroa 161/528 (30.5%)
Magsayo 160/464 (34.5%)

* * *

Figueroa has now fought 26 bouts with 153 rounds with a KO rate of 69.23%. While Magsayo in 26 bouts has fought 155 rounds with 61.54% KO.
