SPORTSCLOPEDIA 34: EUMIR MARCIAL WILL CONCENTRATE ON HIS PROFESSIONAL CAREER

PhilBoxing.com

Eumir Marcial, bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics for the Philippines, says he will now concentrate on his professional boxing career that surged when he won by a spectacular second round TKO against Argentine Ricardo Villalba Saturday, February 11, at the Alamodome, San Antonio, Texas, USA.

According to his promoter MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons, Marcial is waiving his intention to participate in the 2024 Paris Olympics as reported by the Philippine Star. The Zamboanga boxing star missed the 2016 Rio Olympics but went to the Tokyo Games and took home an Olympic bronze medal.

Gibbons said Marcial has already "achieved his Olympic dream" as quoted by Joaquin Henson. He will now set his sight on becoming a world champion and earn a lot of money in pro boxing. Eumir is targeting more belts and more titles.

He encountered the inconvenience of fighting in the pros and revert to amateur then go back to professional fights. "In the amateurs, you fight three rounds. In the pros, there’s a lot of strategy, thinking, pivots, picking your spots," Gibbons was quoted by Joaquin Henson.

Gibbons said Marcial’s splendid performance of annihilating Villalba was a confirmation of his being a focused on his pro preparations. Marcial floored Villalba in the first round to signal the start of his dominant battle.

The 27-year-old Marcial again floored Villalba to the canvas twice more in the second round before the referee decided to stop the fight at the 48-second mark to prevent the Filipino from wrecking further destruction on the Argentine.

Gibbons told Marcial that with adequate training he will get stronger and become a world champion. So he worked hard, trained every day, ran up the mountains, got good sparring and excellent conditioning.

Marcial said he studied the tapes of famous southpaws in the likes of WBA lightweight champion Gervonta "Tank" Davis. Gibbons said that Marcial’s solid fast jabs is the best by a Filipino boxer as he had observed and his KO power came close to Manny Pacquiao.

“Our plan is for Eumir to join the world championship ranks of Manny Pacquiao, Mark Magsayo, Marlon Tapales and Jerwin Ancajas,” said Gibbons as reported. He added that PBC CEO Al Haymon called right after Eumir's victory and he was excited. Marcial is slated to fight in 10-rounder in the next bout and it will be for a regional title belt.
