Warriors Win Second Straight Over the Timberwolves

PhilBoxing.com

Golden State's Steph Curry shoots the ball over Minnesota's McDaniels.

San Francisco, CA—The Golden State Warriors defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 123-111, sweeping the two game home series. Building off the performance last Monday, the new look starting lineup with Kevon Looney starting in place of rookie James Wiseman once again built a lead in the first quarter and expanded the lead in the third quarter. When Wiseman was in the starting lineup, the Warriors were statistically the worst lineup in the NBA. Head coach Steve Kerr still has high expectations for the second overall pick of this year’s draft, but will, as of now, stick with the new starting lineup.

Both teams shot poorly in the first quarter. Stephen Curry did not score until the last few minutes of the second half. However, Curry was able to heat up in the second half scoring 14 of his 16 points with four three-pointers. Curry did lead the team, along with Draymond Green, with eight assists. Despite an off-night scoring wise for Curry, the Warriors as a team shot 53% from the field, including 15-34 from three-point range.

The Warriors had five players score in double figures lead by Wiseman’s career high 25 points off the bench. Kelly Oubre Jr., who had foul trouble early, had 20 points and 9 rebounds in just 24 minutes. Oubre Jr. has been rumored to be on the trading block as he is in the final year of his contract. Andrew Wiggins again played well against his former team, scoring 19 points. Damion Lee had a season high 17 points with four made three-pointers. It was refreshing to see the Warriors win without their star player leading the team in points.

The Timberwolves were again without D’Angelo Russell who is still nursing a right quad condition, and Karl Anthony Towns who is still in COVID safety protocol. The only player drafted before Wiseman, Anthony Edwards, and Malik Beasley led the Wolves with 25 points each. Minnesota, trailing as much as 25 points, made a run in the fourth quarter to stay competitive. It is difficult to assess the young Timberwolves without their two best players on the court. Russell and Towns have only played a handful of games together since Russell was traded to Minnesota for Wiggins back on February 7, 2020. After spending four days in San Francisco, Minnesota will travel back home to face the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday.

Warriors have a quick turn-a-round as they head to Phoenix to face the talented Suns tomorrow night. Both teams are expected to contend for the final playoff spots in the Western Conference.
