Ph Best Versus the Best of the Rest of Southeast Asia in SEAG Boxing Finals

PhilBoxing.com

Boxing will virtually be the best of the Philippines against the best of the rest of Southeast Asia.

The five Filipino fighters who figured in the semi finals of the 30th Southeast Asian Games boxing competitions Sunday afternoon all won their bouts bringing to ten the country's boxers vying for the gold in the finals Monday, the most of the field.

Irish Magno opened up the country's semis campaign with a victory over a Thai and James Palicte fittingly closed it with a win over another Thai. That avenged the two defeats suffered by the team against Thai foes in Friday's first semifinal round.

Magno defeated Jitpong Jutamas in the women's flyweight semifinals by 4-1 decision to launch the team's good start.

Rogen Ladon followed it up with a convincing 5-0 unanimous decision win over Singapore's lone survivor Hamid Muhammad in their flyweight semi final contest.

Before the first session break, Charly Suarez made it three in a row by 5-0 unanimous decision win over Vietnam's Vu Thanh Dat which was punctuated by a knockdown and a standing eight count in the final two rounds.

At the resumption, Riza Pasuit continued the winning roll scoring a 4-1 decision over her burly Indonesian foe Hassanah Huswatun.

And finally, Palicte defeated Thailand's Phoemsap Atachai in a highly tactical match by 4-1 decision to wrap up the campaign.

The five thus joined middleweight Felix Eumir Marcial, welterweight Marjon Pianar, light flyweight Carlo Paalam, women's featherweight Nesthy Petecio and women's light flyweight Josie Gabuco in the finals.

Recent world silver medalist Marcial and Suarez will be gunning for their third gold while Gabuco will be aiming for her fifth gold. Petecio, the recent world women's championship winner is looking for her first gold in three SEAG stints.

In Monday's women's finals, Gabuco is up against Endang of indonesia, Magno is paired against Nguyen Thi Tam of Vietnam, Petecio fights Nwe Oo Ni of Myanmar and Pasuit goes up against Seesondee Sidaporn of Thailand.

In the men's finals, Marcial fights Nguyen Manh Couk of Vietnam, Pianar meets Wuttichai Masuk of Thailand, Palicte tangles with Nguyen Van Hai also of Vietnam, Suarez battles Pednuch Khutnatip of Thailand, Ladon goes up against another Thai Yaodam Ammarit and Paalam takes on Kornelius Lungu of Indonesia.

The country have no finalist only in the light heavyweight, men's and women's bantamweight following the shock elimination of John Marvin Nobel in the quarterfinals and defeats of Ian Clark Bautista and Aira Villegas in the semi finals Friday. Bautista and Villegas settled for bronze medals.
