PINOY ONE OF THE JUDGES IN SPENCE-PORTER FIGHT
By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Sep 2019
Filipino boxing judge Rey Danseco will sit as one of judges in the highly anticipated Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter welterweight unification bout this Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The undefeated and highly favored Spence (25-0-0, 21KOs) is the IBF world welterweight champion while the underdog Porter (30-2-1, 17KOs) is the WBC world welterweight champion. The winner could fight Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao, the WBA welterweight champion, to unify three of the four major belts in the division. The other world welterweight champion holding the WBO belt is Terrence Crawford.
The San Francisco, California resident Danseco, 46, who originally hails from Calauag, Quezon in the Philippines, has been assigned in some high-profile fights in his fruitful judging career including the Bernard Hopkins vs Jean Pascal II, Leo Santa Cruz vs Abner Mares II, Canelo Alvarez vs Austin Trout and several others. Danseco's last assignment was for the Amir Khan vs Billy Dib International welterweight title in Saudi Arabia last July.
Rey Danseco (2nd from right) was awarded WBC 'Judge of the Year' during the WBC 50th Convention in Cancun, Mexico in 2012.
The other two judges for the Spence-Porter fight are Steve Weisfeld of New Jersey who will be judging his 11th world title fight this year and Larry Hazzard Jr, also of New Jersery, who has been assigned his fourth world title fight this year. The referee is the veteran Jack Reiss.
