Austin Trout (26-2, 14 KOs), who lost consecutive bouts to Canelo Alvarez and Erislandy Lara by decision last year, has a definitive pick for Alvarez vs Lara which will take place July 12.
So will Canelo be taking too great a risk when he squares off against the largely-avoided Cuban?
Former WBA Jr Middleweight title holder Austin Trout believes so.
“Lara is the better boxer,” Trout told BoxingScene.com. “Canelo may be strong but I don’t think he’ll be able to land on Lara. I’ve got Lara by unanimous decision.”
Sans Alfredo Angulo, the only common opponent for Canelo and Lara added, “Lara’s got hell of a footwork, he’s got a quick left hand and that left hand is going to find a home early.”
Mexican superstar Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez unified the WBC and WBA Super Welterweight titles with a unanimous decision victory over Austin Trout on April 20th in front of a raucous 39,247 crowd at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.
Although Trout was more active, landed more and was relatively equal with Canelo in the powershots category, supporters of the verdict will insist Canelo deserved a 10-8 for his knockdown of Trout and ensuing dominance in Round 7.Moreover, they will argue Alvarez’s powershots were more damaging and eye-catching than Trout’s.
Lara vs Trout eight months later was an entirely different fight as the Cuban cruised to a decisive twelve round unanimous decision in a tactical ‘chess match’ of sorts.
“The Cuban school won the fight,” stated Lara afterwards.
“I put on a clinic using the Cuban method of boxing. I want to tell Canelo Alvarez that I beat Austin Trout better and I want to face him in the near future.”
Fans last saw Canelo Alvarez soundly defeat Alfredo Angulo on March 8. Few expected the former WBC/WBA Jr Middleweight Champion to orchestrate such a brutal, one-sided beat down which culminated in a 10th Round, somewhat controversial stoppage.
