Mayweather vs Maidana: Stats & Facts, post-fight

In last night’s WBC/WBA welterweight unification showdown, Floyd Mayweather (46-0, 26 KOs) was pushed to the limit in his twelve round majority decision over a tough Marcos Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

To no one’s surprise, an aggressive Maidana pounced on Mayweather from the opening bell, unloading wild shots from odd angles to fluster the pound-for-pound king who spent a fair amount of time with his back to the ropes.

In the center of the ring, however, Floyd outclassed and outsped his foe to good effect as ‘Money May’ landed some sweet, thudding body shots despite absorbing some hard blows downstairs as well.

The rugged Maidana, who cut Mayweather in Round 4 with an unintentional headbutt, drew warnings throughout the fight for pushing and unleashing shots that drifted ‘south of the border’ but Referee Tony Weeks did not deduct a point. Thanks to his awkward but relentless aggression, one could make a case Maidana was ahead after eight rounds, 5-3 or 4-3-1. However, Mayweather would adjust well in the ensuing rounds to outbox his Argentine opponent and, perhaps, carry at least three of the final four stanzas.

Official scores were 114-114, 117-111, 116-112 and FightSaga scored it 115-113 for the ‘Money Man’ in a bout that could have conceivably gone either way.

Floyd is now unified WBC/WBA champion at both welterweight and super welterweight.
