GENERAL SANTOS CITY, Philippines ? World eight-division boxing champ Manny Pacquiao wants to assure his fans that boxing, not basketball, remains his top priority.
?They have nothing to worry about. I?m more of a boxer than basketball player. I will play basketball but not to the extent of risking my bread and butter, which is boxing,? Pacquiao said in in a telephone interview.
During his April 12 rematch with American boxer Timothy Bradley, Pacquiao earned $20 million in just 36 minutes, a fortune he cannot expect to receive in his entire life as a basketball player.
Pacquiao said he would play when Kia Motors joins the Philippine Basketball Association in October.
?I thank those who expressed concern over my decision to play in professional basketball. I understand the game. I will focus more on coaching rather than playing especially during crucial games,? said Pacquiao, who also represents the province of Sarangani in the House of Representatives.
The Filipino ring icon said he would give more playing time to other team players, especially when the game gets highly physical.
?I?m aware of the institution where I am in. As a lawmaker I have to make sure that the dignity of the institution I?m representing is protected. I?d like to show to the world that even as a boxing icon and lawmaker, I can play fair and square in a competitive game like PBA,? he said.
Some fans and critics expressed concern that Pacquiao?s status as revered global boxing icon and lawmaker could be demeaned if and when a player elbows him or if somebody blocks his shot or steals the ball from him.
?That?s part of the game. To me, what matters most is humility even amidst derision as well as grace and sportsmanship amidst defeat,? he said.
He said KIA management?s goal is to bring the team to the finals within three-year?s time.
