BOXING idol Manny Pacquiao merely offered to help Manila Mayor Lito Atienza in carrying out his development projects out of gratitude for the support given to him by the city government since he started his boxing career.
Atienza issued the statement on Monday amid talks about Pacquiao’s possible jump from the boxing ring to the political arena. He also denied that he had already endorsed Pacquiao to be the running mate of his son Arnold “Ali” Atienza, who is the presidential assistant on youth and sports and chair of the Manila Sports Council.
“That’s not true. We have not discussed Pacquiao’s possible role or the best way he could be of help to the city of Manila, the city of his youth,” the mayor said.
Fanning the reports about Pacquiao’s political plans was his filing of a transfer of registration records from General Santos to the sixth district of Manila where he owns a condominium unit.
“Manny had himself registered as a voter and resident of Manila simply because he wanted to vote here. He said he wanted to help in our programs. He is one of those who admired the big changes in the city,” Atienza said.
“This is a reflection of this young man’s character. Manny is not an ordinary boxer. He is a very, very grateful individual because of our friendship, he never forgets and he wants to help me.”
But Atienza said there was “conclusion as to what role he would play.”
