Op-Ed: Mayweather could be avoiding speedy fighters like Pacquiao, Khan

British boxing sensation Amir Khan believes Floyd Mayweather is trying to find a way to avoid a showdown with him in the ring because of his speed and power, saying that the unbeaten champion is no longer the same fighter he was three or four years ago Khan said the reason Mayweather is dillydallying on his decision to name his next opponent is because he wants to pick slow-moving fighters. Khan believes that Mayweather will have trouble with speedy fighters like him and Manny Pacquiao. ?I mean, don?t get me wrong, he is a great fighter, but he has dodged two of the quickest fighters in the business because he knows I can give him a headache,? Khan said, referring to himself and Pacquiao. ?Floyd is not the same fighter he was three or four years ago. That?s why he picks slow fighters, because he doesn’t have the same movement as he used to.

Khan, who had already affixed his signature in a contract to face Mayweather in the ring on Mary 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, feels that he has been disrespected by the Mayweather camp by keeping him hostage to their selection process. The 27-year-old pride of Bolton, England, has given up a nearly-sealed fight with Devon Alexander last December in the hope of landing a lucrative fight with Mayweather. But recent developments point to his possible junking in favor of a slower fighter like Marcos Maidana of Argentina. Khan spoke about lost opportunities stemming from his long waiting time for the fight to get done. In one of his messages to his fans on Twitter, he said: ?Very disrespected by his (Floyd?s) team. Wasted my time.? Top Rank Promotions owner Bob Arum has been sympathetic with the way Khan is being treated by Mayweather’s camp. According to Arum, what Mayweather is doing to Khan is disgraceful, referring to the manner in which Khan is being treated in his quest to land a lucrative fight with him. “What he has done to Amir Khan is absolutely disgraceful, whether he ends up fighting him, or he doesn’t,” Arum told Telegraph Sport in an exclusive interview from Macau, China, where his boxer, Zou Shiming, the former double Olympic gold medalist, fights this weekend. “My feeling is he is not going to fight him, but it’s disgraceful to do that to another human being because you are in a position to do that. Just because he has the power where you can do something like that, he added. Usually training for a major fight takes minimum of two months and there are still about two weeks more left for Mayweather to decide and make the announcement. Mayweather is expected to announce his next opponent before the end of this month.
