On May 3, Floyd Mayweather will return to his favorite fight venue at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada for his third of a series of six fights that he signed up with CBS/Showtime in 2012. Mayweather will be facing either British ring sensation Amir Khan or WBA welterweight champion Marcos Maidana of Argentina. During his recent trip to South Africa, Mayweather said he will announce his opponent for his May 3 ring return last weekend but so far no announcement has been made. Read more. It appears that Khan has the edge over Maidana, who has reportedly agreed to a rematch with Adrien Broner. Maidana dethroned Broner last Dec. 14 at the Alamodome in Texas to grab Broner’s WBA welterweight title via a unanimous decision. This makes Khan the only contender for Mayweather’s scheduled fight on May 3. But who will Mayweather fight next? The unbeaten champ has earlier announced he will again fight in September but did not say who will be his next opponent. In the welterweight division, Mayweather could bank on at least four prospects including the winner of the upcoming Maidana-Broner rematch. Should Timothy Bradley wins over Manny Pacquiao (if the fight pushes through), he could be a candidate for the Mayweather sweepstakes. Bradley, who is undefeated in 31 fights is the No.1 challenger in the welterweight division. Another candidate is fourth-ranked welterweight contender Kell Brook of U.K., who is unbeaten in 31 professional fights. The fourth candidate could either be Keith Thurman or Shawn Porter, the former sparring partner of Pacquiao. Both Porter and Thurman are undefeated in their professional careers. Boxing fans have given up on the possible matchup between Mayweather and Pacquiao after a series of failed negotiations over the last four years. There is a slim chance though that they will succumb to public pressures to give boxing fans the fight that they’ve always wanted to see and that fight would likely happen in 2015.
