The loquacious and colorful James ‘Lights Out’ Toney, a future hall of famer, had some hard works for two “soft” men.
Reporting maestro Elie Seckbach of ES News caught up with the former three-division world champion James Toney this week.
“Deontay Wilder, if you’re watching this, and I hope you are watching this, please don’t make a fool of yourself,” espoused the controversial Toney.
“All your fights have been set-ups.” “You’ve been protected.”
“Tyson Fury, you’re the same thing. All your fights have been set-ups.”
“Neither one of you guys are fighting.”
When asked who he’d pick in a presumptive clash between the two massive heavyweight prospects, Toney declared it was a “toss-up,” insisting they are equally untested.
“When I came up, I fought everybody. I fought the best.”
“But they [boxing’s promoters and managers] are scared to do that today,” proclaimed the 45 year old pugilist.
Moreover, Toney is not convinced either fighter would pose significant problems for him in the ring.
“They’re both easy. Neither one can take a shot.”
Deontay Wilder, 28, is 30-0, 30 KOs while the 25 year old Tyson Fury is 21-0, 15 KOs.
Can the 45 year old Toney, who would be giving up at least eight inches to Wilder and 11 to Fury, defeat either young lion?
Despite his size, or lack thereof, a 40 year old version of ‘Lights Out’ may have given those fellas fits, but Toney hasn’t looked good in years and would be a solid underdog against Wilder and Fury today.
