I want to first thank all of the RSR readers for the support in making this the best boxing website on the net. We couldn?t do it without you and I personally appreciate the support. Now, with that out of the way, how the hell are you people doing? I was watching this special about a U.F.O crashing in Aurora, Texas in 1897, and it was a pretty crazy story. I love that U.F.O/Sasquatch/Loch Ness/Ghosts stuff, even though I have a hard time believing it. I knew this lady ?Maureen? and she was really hairy and she loved camping. Do you know where I?m going with this? Well, we?ve had Bigfoot sightings relatively close to my city and I have come to the conclusion that it may have bee Maureen. Maybe not, but I make it more likely than a man-ape.
So, where was I? Oh yeah, the U.F.O crash in Texas. It was pretty intriguing and they supposedly had an alien grave and pieces of the spaceship, but there was nothing substantial. What a disappointment! It would be so awesome if these things were real, but I hate to say that my skeptical side rules and I find aliens hard to believe. I don?t think that there?s a Loch Ness Monster either. My Aunt Polly in a bathing suit, swimming around in her pool might be close, but it is not confirmation that this huge, fat, sea monster is swimming around.
I remember a time when I was writing my research paper on the Sasquatch, and the police knocked on my door as I searched the net for information. I thought that I had gotten too close to the truth, but my next door neighbor apparently had beaten his wife after taking a smidge of heroin. Well, they wanted to use my apartment because we shared two staircases and if he were going to run for it, they wanted to head him off at the pass. So my neighbor flung open his door, and began firing at the cops?bang! Bang! Bang! He then jumped out of his window and ran knocking down elderly people along the way. Okay, that didn?t happen. He was tackled and arrested pretty quickly, but he blamed me for calling the cops! I am so glad that I got out of that horrible apartment building. There were drug addicts, drug dealers, people breaking into my place and stealing things and my beautiful 1990 Ford Taurus was broken into several times.
Do you know what pissed me off the most about that apartment complex? Well, the rent of 800 smackers a month was pretty steep for what it was, but worse than that, was this 350 pound whale of a man riding one of those loud motorcycles that are made for children. You know what I?m talking about. They are really tiny and they look like actual motorcycles. Well, this blob would ride it back and forth all day and night and drive me crazy! I was the happiest man on the planet when I moved far away and got a house where my neighbors don?t deal drugs. Well, they?re pretty old. If they?re dealing anything?it?s probably Viagra, but I?m cool with that my friends. At least that blimp hasn?t found his way over to my neck of the woods with that damn motorcycle.
Okay, boxing fans, do you want to go ?sacking? as I call it? You do? Oh that?s fantastic because I have so many things that need to be said and I am fully prepared to answer your questions. I think that I should also remind everyone that the ?Geno Bambino Question of the Month Award,? is up for grabs. This month an autographed copy of: ?The Great White Hopes? by Graeme Kent. This book rocks and I?m almost tempted to keep it, but the RSR readers mean so much to me that I am giving it away.

My friend how are you doing? RSR has come a long way in the last two months and we are ever expanding. The mailbag has exploded and I could not be happier. Well, to be honest, I could be happier. If I somehow had a rich relative that died and left me a lot of money, or if I found a lottery ticket and it was a big winner, I would be even happier. Money isn?t everything however, but it would be nice to have a few months that go by without me crossing my fingers when the mortgage check hits. I write like crazy now, but it?s a labor of love and I dig it when somebody gives me some props and I am amused when somebody goes off on me. You can?t please everyone, my friend?Happy 4th to you as well my friend. This was the first year that my son was really alert to the fireworks in the sky. He?s 16 months now and was clapping after each explosion.
Hmm. Have I ever played video games? That?s a big YES. I think that I have owned every boxing video game that has come out. I will rank them?
1.Mike Tyson?s Punch Out (Sentimental favorite and a lot of fun to boot. The different characters and great game play made this Nintendo title the best.)
2.Fight Night, Round 3 (I still don?t like the way bouts are set up for career mode, but the game play is as realistic as you can get and it is addicting. I wish that I had more time to play it.)
3.Fight Night, Round 2 (It is very similar to Round 3, but the feel isn?t as good, even though I thought that it was a fantastic game.)
4.Fight Night (EA?s boxing simulation game brought great game play and annoying commentators. Great game though)
5.Ready 2 Rumble (What a fun game this was. The second one stunk, but this entry was outstanding. The movement and feel of this game was great.)
6.Rocky (I have the X Box version of this title and it is really great. Once you get the handle of it though, it is easy?)
7.Super Punch Out (Super Nintendo released this one, which is similar to the Mike Tyson release, but with better graphics, different characters, and no Mike Tyson.)
8.HBO Boxing (This came out for the original Playstation and it was the best simulation game there was until Fight Nights rolled around. They did a lot with the little that they had and produced a good game, with a good career mode and recognizable fighters.)
9.Evander Holyfield Boxing (This came out for the Sega Genesis and was a really decent game for its time.)
10.Ring King (The original Nintendo came out with this gem. I remember launching people out of the ring with the uppercut. It was a lot of fun.)

But you made an error on Mitch Halpern who at such a young age was sure to be one of the great referee’s of all time and also a great person who donated a lot of free time speaking for organizations that raised money’s for the sick and so on, My condolences are out to his family especially his daughter, But if I recall Mitch took his life over a domestic dispute not for the reason you said was over a death of a fighter.
On the same subject if you saw the Calzaghe-Lacy massacre the referee was Raul Caiz Sr. who did one of the best jobs I have seen in years because of the excitement of the fighters his job was not that noticeable but he took command of the fight, hardly seen. got the fighters respect by bringing them together by their boxing trunks and telling them which you could not hear because they are not miked over there and broke the clinches at exactly right time, I wish he would be able to referee some big fights in the states .

How are you doing my friend? I was aware of Halpern?s problems at home and I believe that he took his life with his family in the house after an argument with his wife, but from what I?ve heard, he never was able to get over the death of Jimmy Garcia and it haunted him until the day he died. Would he have taken his life had Garcia not been killed in the ring? I don?t think so. Halpern was a fantastic referee and unfortunately, boxing has had its share of casualties as all contact sports do, and if Mitch held himself responsible?that?s a lot to have on your mind. My condolences are also with his family.
I also thought that the officiating of the Calzaghe-Lacy bout was fair and there was no controversy?great performance by the Welshman for sure!

It’s my 1st time to write to you. You really got my attention here. I love reading your Mailbag.
I just want to know if you noticed the way those announcers introduce “The Pacman” during the past 4, 5 years in his match in the U. S.
They always give good credits / introduction to the Mexican opponent compared to “The Pacman”. Why? Is it because we’re “just Filipinos”?
I think these Boxing Organizers or whoever is in-charge of this should put somebody fair, well-educated and non-racist announcers.
I remember during his (The Pacman) with Barrera, in the early rounds, everything they say is in favor of Barrera and that Pacman was no match against him (Barrera). It was a slap on their faces when seeing Pacman never getting exhausted. His stamina amazed quite everybody.
Tomorrow’s going to be a big day and I’m pretty much confident that it’s just going to be another victory for “The Pacman” and The Philippines.
It’s just too bad for me coz I work at night from 11pm till 7am and it’s going to be televise here in Qatar at 4am. Well anyway, thanks for the space.

There is no question that the announcers have instructions and will obey their orders, and if fighter A is the draw, and fighter B isn?t really well known, then the A fighter is going to get the better and more energetic announcement. The worst thing that I have ever seen was the heavyweight title fight between Larry Holmes and the challenger, Gerry Cooney. They announced Holmes first! They went against years of tradition because Cooney was America?s (white) hope. It was disgusting. So, I?m not prepared to call the announcers racist, but I will say that they know which side their bread is buttered on, and I CAN believe it?s not butter, if you know what I?m saying. Do you know what I?m saying? Me either.
I don?t really remember the HBO crew stating that Pacman wasn?t a match for MAB. I think that the consensus was that MAB was going to win and it may have taken their eyes a while to tell their mind what they were actually seeing. I was the same way with Mike Tyson?s loss to James Douglas. ?Oh, Tyson is doing his thing, if you know what I?m saying?? When I saw him on the canvas, sprawled out and reaching for his mouthpiece, I said: ?Oh, Tyson?yeah, he got knocked the @$#@# out, if you know what I?m saying?? So, don?t take it personally. It?s difficult for some people to look at a situation for what it is when they have preconceived notions.

How’s it goin’? I was just a little peeksqueak when Ali was dominating the heavyweight division that’s why I really don’t have a solid idea how great he was. In contrast, I’ve witnessed how L.Lewis defended his heavyweight title till he ran out of opponents and just retired. Is it safe to say that LL is equal to MA?

The guys that usually have those ridiculous barbwire tattoos around their arms will respond with that, or sometimes even say: ?What are you looking at,? as you walk by, completely minding your own business. They wear those ?No Fear? hats, because if you are a tough guy, you need a barbwire tattoo and a no fear hat. You also have the ?tough guys? that roll up their short sleeve, tee shirts to give the impression that their arms are bigger than they are. What the hell is wrong with these people? I have never met a girl that was impressed by a jerk that is a self-proclaimed tough guy. It?s natural to have fear anyway, and I know fear! I was a Boy Scout and an Altar Boy for the Catholic Church. Let?s just say, that I learned to avoid certain sticky situations. The point is: I was very fearful. You would be too if your Boy Scout leader was 50 years old and lived at home with his mother!
Muhammad Ali as a political figure was larger than life and he really showed the huge heart of a champion as he defeated George Foreman and Sonny Liston, and especially in his third encounter with Joe Frazier. As a World Heavyweight Champion, he was one of the best, but he would have his hands full with Lennox Lewis. In my opinion, Lewis is really underrated as a champion and would certainly give any champion throughout history a tough time. Now, which Lewis shows up for this fight? Is it the passive Lewis or the focused and ambition Lewis? If he?s passive, he loses a decision. If he?s mentally there, he wins a decision. Overall, I think that Ali accomplished more and should be held in a higher regard, but if you made this match, I would lean toward ?The Lion? slightly.

What is up dude? Ike Ibeabuchi comes to mind as the possible savoir of the heavyweight division, only to waste that potential and go to prison for a long, long time. He raped a girl, but don?t worry, in prison, the hunter becomes the hunted. They?ll get him. Boxing helps so many people that were really troubled kids growing up, but many fall right back into it, like Clifford ?The Black Rhino? Etienne. Don?t worry Rhino fans?he?ll be out of prison in 150 years. It is so amazing what drugs can do to a person. Even Peter McNeeley, the man that was the first lamb led to slaughter after Mike Tyson?s release has had his run-ins with the law. Recently, he was apparently the getaway driver for a robbery and his problems are believed to be drug related. Why doesn?t Bob Dylan write another song called: ?Hurricane,? based on Peter McNeeley? It could do with this latest robbery! Yes! This is an awesome idea. Then, we will make millions on the movie: Hurricane 2: A New Beginning?or something like that. I will need a cut because it was my idea.
Hey, did you know that in Rocky V, Peter McNeeley almost had the part that eventually went to Tommy Morrison. I can imagine Stallone looking at McNeeley and saying: ?Not that geek.? What about Tommy Morrison? He was a promising heavyweight that could have probably won a title eventually, outside of the WBO Brand, but he couldn?t keep it in his pants and unfortunately is HIV positive. He now claims that he is completely clean, but he?s been in denial for so long, that it is hard to take him seriously. He seems like a really cool guy and I wish him well, but some risks aren?t just yours to take?
Pernell Whitaker, the best fighter of all time, had his issues with drugs and unfortunately, more people associate him with that instead of with his glorious career. It was glorious! I love that word?glorious! It baffles me at times to think of fighters that have everything and still do drugs. Michael Dokes and Tony Tubbs both had drug problems that prevented them both from living up to their true potential. Why TNT, Why? One of the new bad boys of boxing has to be Nikolay Valuev. I know that there has only been a peep from him, but what a peep, and I ain?t talking about those marshmallow candies that they give out on Easter (bad joke of the day). Valuev beat the heck out of a sixty-year-old security guard for telling his wife to move her car. Come on ?Beast from the East,? pick on somebody your own size?if you can find somebody like that. All those people that say: ?I would love for one of these rich boxers to beat me up, so I can ching-cha-ching-ching-ching! I?ll be rich,? would probably have a different opinion as this monster approached. I know what I would do if I were standing there and he wanted to destroy me. I would tell him that my boss demanded it because he thinks that Valuev is a big moron. That way, my boss gets a good beating and I don?t get hurt. 1.Rocky Juarez, who I believe will beat MAB in the rematch.
2.Juan Diaz, for the WBA Lightweight Title.
3.Acelino Freitas, for the unified WBA/WBO Lightweight Title, should Pacman defeat Diaz.
I think that the road is paved for other Asian fighters. Look at Bobby Pacquiao. He?s getting a lot of attention because his brother paved the way, and I?m sure that it won?t stop there, although the U.S.A. likes things that are super-sized. Have you seen our population? In his division today, I want to see him face Rocky Juarez, the young and strong fighter that is improving and will give the Pacman quite the test. He has short and accurate punches and will not go without a fight. Should Juarez defeat MAB as I suspect, a bout between these two would be fantastic.

I thought Pacquiao could have ended the fight in 7 or 8, but he was more tactical-minded from the 8th round on. On the positive, it proves one thing, that besides speed and power, he has also stamina. He should not fight the big fights though in the Philippines, because the distractions of a home-town audience and being business-minded as a promoter can sometimes be overwhelming, especially for Pacquiao who is obsessed apparently with pleasing the crowd. What?s up dude? Part of Manny?s strength is his endurance and ability to raise the activity a notch or two down the stretch. This is why we have seen MAB and EM on their backs in the later rounds, which is something that they are not accustomed to at all. What is going on my friend? There was a lot of talk concerning Manny?s conditioning, but he looked to be well trained to me. I think that Larios proved to be a much more dangerous opponent than expected and Pacman elected to take it easy and if the knock out comes, great, but if it doesn?t, that?s great too as long as he wins. In boxing, one loss, especially against an opponent that isn?t highly regarded can spell disaster, so this fight with Larios was very important to win, and I thought that he did it well. Thanks for the greetings my friend and hello to everyone in Laguna! I was able to see the main event: Pacman vs. Larios and I will tackle that first. I think that Manny did what he had to do. He wasn?t his best, but with all the distractions, I think that what he did accomplish was remarkable. He delivered consistent punishment to a very tough man over the 12 round distance. Gerry Penalosa has won four straight, but I can?t see him defeating the top guys of that division. He may prove me wrong, but I see him as just one notch below the top 10 guys.

I’ve been reading your column for quite a time now and I like your sense of humor and sarcasm in some of your replies, esp. when some questions are non-sensical at times. But I understand some readers are just excited that they lose some sense in the process.
By the way, the way fight fans talk about the coming Pacquiao-Larios bout as if it were an Apollo Creed-Rocky Balboa match makes me think that Larios is really an unworthy opponent for Manny. But if that is so, why would it still sell? Larios is an ex-champion and he may have lost his recent fights, but in any fight, I think motivation plays the most important role and I’m 100% sure Larios is 100% motivated to win this fight more than any other fighter in the world, coming from back-to-back losses and with nothing to lose but his remaining reputation. Don’t you think Larios could do a Rocky and send my countryman Manny’s popularity downward? Thanks and more power to you.

Thanks dude. When I was a kid, I was told that if I kept on cracking jokes that I wouldn?t have any friends. I ended up saying ?F them? and maintained my course and I am so happy that I did. I am happy that the people are having fun with this segment and I will keep on putting out there like this until I look at my inbox and see 0 for messages.
The reason that the Larios bout sold is because Manny Pacquiao is involved. Why did De La Hoya-Sturm sell? ?The Golden Boy? is Midas, really. Whatever he touches turns to gold. When a fighter captures the imagination of the public like the two above have, it doesn?t really matter who they fight. Look at George Foreman. He got away with fighting the limited Jimmy Ellis on HBO because the public didn?t care who he fought because they loved him so much. Big George was the man. Larios could not be another Rocky because he doesn?t wear a half shirt like Rocky did. Why the hell did Stallone wear that? And what about those shorty-shorts. Do you have any decency Mr. Stallone? Those left nothing to the imagination and with the clarity of DVDs, and my big screen T.V., the scenes with you running on the beach with Apollo Creed are incredibly disturbing. I can imagine what Mick would be saying: ?Hey Rock. Put it away Rock.?
I don?t think that Larios was the underdog that Rocky was. Apollo was undefeated going in to fight this club fighter. Man, I have to write another Rocky article. I love that series. I was the PACMAN-Larios fight and I saw how he beat Larios from rounds 4 to 10. In round 9 and 10, knowing Pacquiao, I knew he will go for a knockout but I believe he didn’t want to go for the kill…. there are rumors that he just wanted to entertain the fans to give them a show or he was protecting himself from a lucky punch from Larios to be in top shape for Morales bout in Nov.

How are you doing? I am so happy with the popularity of this segment. It has taken off and it went from one bag to three and I will make fifty bags if need be?well, my hands will probably fall off from typing if that were to happen. It would really suck not to have hands. How would I make a living? I would have to be a male escort with a warning: Does Not Have Hands. I don?t think that I would get any business. My God, I hope that my hands never fall off.
I think that the Pacman wasn?t taking any chances with this Larios because in the 3rd round, he got Manny?s attention and showed that he didn?t come there to fall down. Pacman did the smart thing and did more than enough to win, but didn?t go out there, pushing for a KO. If it happened, it happened, but he was content with the UD. It was still very impressive. The PACMAN – LARIOS previous fight was GREAT!!!, I saw PACMAN’s become matured in his fighting style… I knew He can KO’s LARIOS in the mids rounds… Likewise, LARIOS.., got the respect of Filipinos… for his sportsmanship…. I wish Oscar will get another mega comeback fight in the future…
With Manny’s fighting style right now…. i really don’t know…. IF EM,JMM and or MAB can beat PACMAN….

Larios proved to the world that he was one tough dude and talented as well. No way does MAB defeat the Pacman at this point in their careers outside of a fluke like a head butt that goes to the cards early and MAB gets a close nod or something. Man vs. Man, he can?t win. JMM and EM have a shot, but it?s remote at this point, especially for Morales. JMM would have the best shot of the three because he knows the key to winning and has the skills to implement the plan, but can he avoid the power for 12 rounds and stick to the plan against an improved Pacman? I don?t know.

I?m very much interested in Edwin Valero cause he sure can punch, very disappointed for Rey Bautista to be pulled out of the Pacman vs Chololo under card?he could have brought the excitement of a knockout win.
Oscar “Chololo” Larios is a real warrior and I really think he will be a force in the 126lbs division. I would love to have him match up with Chris John. (I’d bet on Chololo on this one for sure)
Were you able to watch the Pacman vs Chololo fight? if you did, how did you score the under card bouts? Was it really a shutout for the Filipino fighters? Did Manny pull some of his punches a little bit so as to have the bout go the whole 12 rounds and have the home crowd enjoy it to the max? Just thought that Manny was bit conservative in his punches and there were a lot of instances that he had Chololo in dire defense.

Thanks for the props my good friend. Too bad about Bautista for sure, but the card survived and the main act delivered. Chris John is pretty darn good. I would make him the slight favorite over Larios, although Larios hasn?t really lost to a guy that couldn?t hurt him, and John?s power is questionable. Unfortunately, I was unable to see the under card bouts, but nobody has questioned them as far as I know. I don?t think that Manny was pulling any punches. He was being conservative, and I think that he was really nervous about being shown up in front of his hometown fans. With his popularity, he has a lot of pressure and doesn?t want to disappoint. So, I think that he fought a cautious and affective fight against a dangerous and motivated challenger. Good job Manny!

It?s me again. I just want to ask your honest opinion about the recent fight between Larios and Pacquiao because of all the boxing experts based in the US, I respect you the most. Anyway, on to my question: Were you impressed with the way the Pacman fought? Because, honestly, I wasn’t. I mean he could have totally destroyed Chololo if he just had trained longer. It would have sent a very strong message to El Terrible had he knocked Larios out. It would have been a big psychological advantage over the Mexican legend although I think the beating that Manny gave him in January was enough for him to have sleepless nights prior to the fight in November.
You know what Geno? I?m just saddened by the fact that all the distractions that the Pacman encounters day in and day out is slowly affecting his performance on the ring. I’ve followed Manny’s career for 9 years now and I?m very proud to say that I?m a TRUE FAN. I’ve witnessed his growth over the years. He’s like a painting that’s turning into a masterpiece. He’s an inspiration to all of us Filipinos who have to deal with Political Garbage every single day.
So I hope Manny trains very hard for the Morales fight. I hope he goes to the Wild Card early. He should follow if not surpass the training he did prior to the 2nd fight with EM. Doing it would surely increase his chances of defeating El Terrible.
Do you happen to have any contact with the PACMAN? If you do, could you send this to him? Tell him that it comes from a TRUE FAN FROM CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY PHILIPPINES.

Now, I was impressed with Pac?s performance, but as I?ve said in other responses that I thought that he fought more cautiously because of everything on his mind.
