Just when we thought Don King was done with boxing, or that boxing was done with him, the wild-haired promoter revealed than he has more plans in store for the embattled sport of sports.
Before addressing those plans, King analyzed the current state of boxing and what it needs to become relevant again.
?The state of boxing needs a hero,? he said in a CTInterview. ?We need a hero that can relate, identify with the people and when he can do that they get up close and personal and then we can bring back the glory days of boxing when you have those people that they can relate to and identify with and be a part of and that?s what we?re looking for, we?re in search of. So in the meantime we gotta do the best we can with what we have to work with.?
It?s been a long time since Don King ruled the roost, and his last meaningful acquisition was Tavoris Cloud, whose career, not surprisingly, is in jeopardy after a couple of serious setbacks this year.
But fear not. A human weathervane if there ever was one, King is promoting an undefeated Native American fighter by the name of Marcus Oliveira (25-0-1, 20 KOs), who is scheduled to fight current European light heavyweight champion Juergen Braehmer (41-2, 31 KOs) for the vacant WBA light heavyweight title at the Jahnsportforum in Neubrandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany.
?I?ll be in Germany on December the 14th,? King said. ?I?m taking a Native Indian, that?s a Native American before Christopher Columbus discovered it and he?s gonna fight for the world title. So I?m getting the aggregate of all the tribes, the Apache, the Sioux, the Cheyenne, the Blackfoot, you know and try to put them altogether to cheer this guy to try to bring that back to America.?
Some things are eternal. Some things never die.
