JACK Asis is desperate to set the record straight and plans are underway to secure him a rematch before Christmas.
Asis and his supporters are still smarting over a contentious decision last Friday night which saw the Toowoomba-based fighter held to a majority draw by Japan’s Hirohito Fukuhara in their vacant WBC Asia Council Continental super featherweight title bout. Advertisement
One judge awarded the 10-round Rumours International showdown 97-92 to Asis while another two judges marked the contest 94-94.
The draw decision surprised many experienced onlookers, including Asis’s trainer-manager Brendon Smith.
It also ended Asis’s streak of eight wins and dashed his hopes of an immediate climb up the world rankings.
“We feel the fight was taken from us and Jack is hungry for a rematch,” Smith said today.
“We want it by the end of the year. December 7 or 13 are possible dates.
“I’ve spoken to the WBC and they are in favour of it taking place. It’s now up to the Japanese camp.
“I know in the dressing room after the fight they mentioned a possible rematch but that was when everything was on a high.
“We’ll do our best now to make it happen here in Toowoomba.
“I know that’s what the Toowoomba public who got so strongly behind Jack on Friday night want, and I think they deserve a rematch as well.”
