Heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (29-0, 29 KOs) is determined to remain undefeated at all costs. Say what you will about Seth Mitchell, another late starter, whose beard is no match for his ambition, but at least he has fought live competition.
The same cannot be said for Wilder.
Those who were hoping he would step it up after his recent destruction of Siarhei Liakhovich will have to keep hope alive. On the undercard of Bernard Hopkins vs. Karo Morat, Wilder fights another inadequate opponent that he?s guaranteed to ice in the first round.
On October 26 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey, Wilder fights Nicolai Firtha (21-10-1, 8 KOs). The ?Stone Man? fighting out of Akron, Ohio, has lost three of his last fight fights, to Johnathan Banks in 2012, Tyson Fury in 2011, and Alexander Povetkin in 2010. Maybe those losses are offset by wins over 23-21 Robert Hawkins in 2013 and 27-15-3 Ross Thompson in 2011, but then again maybe not.
As long as Wilder keeps knocking men out, people will keep singing his praises. If we don?t join the Amen Choir, it?s not because we don?t like music. It?s just that we prefer competitive fights.
