After Floyd Mayweather jabs, right crosses, dodges, entangles and torments poor young Canelo Alvarez for twelve rounds, all viewers wait to hear whether flashy Floyd has officially won every round or only about nine to earn a six-point victory. Ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Jr., then reveals that this Las Vegas extravaganza will be decided by majority decision. We evidently misunderstand the distinguished voice, or perhaps this is a ruse by his late father, speaking from the hereafter and injecting his nearly identical vocal tones into the mouth of his son. Lennon, the one standing in the ring and presumably providing serious and accurate information, thereupon tells us that one of the judges has scored the fight 114-114. He just as credibly could?ve announced he was in Timbuktu. Let us credit Mayweather for not extending knuckles and diving onto the judges? table. Alvarez also earns praise for suppressing laughter, for even he would?ve scored the fight decisively for Mayweather, and in gentlemanly tones soon says so.
Anger evaporates as most realize that no boxing judge could be so incompetent or hateful. Indeed, such an appalling decision would likely result from a medical malady. Members of the august Nevada Athletic Commission, accompanied by surgeons and emergency medical technicians, engulf the three judges and demand: who did this? The other two point at Cynthia J. Ross, who must possess something secret that frightens powerful people in blistering Las Vegas. How else could she have earned eight grand to sit at ringside and judge a major event? Isn?t this the same Cynthia J. Ross who decreed that Manny Pacquiao lost to Timothy Bradley because, evidently, Pacquiao landed eighty percent more power punches? Yes, it?s the same person. But Ross had an ally, another disturbed arbiter, in the Pacquiao fight and, though stink-inducing, the decision was not appalling enough to mandate immediate intervention.
Floyd Mayweather?s handling of Canelo Alvarez is entirely more serious. If Alvarez landed even a single strong punch, most observers missed it. If he scored with more than a half dozen decent shots, no one but Cynthia J. Ross noticed. Mayweather after the fight is sore in only two spots, his left fist which frequently jabbed the face of Alvarez, and his right which he used to hammer his opponent?s head. Medical experts agree Ross must be examined at once. She?s tested for alcohol?negative. She?s tested for all manner of uppers?negative. She?s tested for powerful painkillers?negative. She?s tested for hallucinogens?negative. She?s given a visual exam and identifies most letters on the chart. Her bank account is checked to see if a few million have recently rolled in. That?s not the answer, either. What can it be? How can a professional judge mistake a decision so overwhelming it?s entirely objective rather than subjective, one so obvious every kid on a playground would accurately assess?
Doctors still don?t know, so the FBI will conduct the next examination.
