A possible crack at a world title is the incentive for Gerry Pe?alosa to go for an impressive victory against Mexican Tomas Rojas in one of the featured supporting bouts of the “Mano-a-Mano” card starring Manny Pacquiao and Oscar Larios on July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum.
A source, who declined to be identified, told Sports Times on Friday that Pe?alosa, the former World Boxing Council super flyweight kingpin, is being lined up for a shot at the World Boxing Association 115-pound division title currently held by Japan’s Nobuo Nashiro.
Nashiro is staking his version of the super flyweight crown on July 22 in Osaka, Japan, against Mexican Martin Castillo.
“If Castillo wins, then he and Gerry will fight for the WBA super flyweight crown in the undercard of the November 18 third match between Manny Pacquiao and Erik Morales,” the source said. “It could be Gerry’s biggest payday.”
Pe?alosa was excited at the prospect of being a world champion again.
“I am really excited so I have to give my best. This is my last chance,” said the 33-year-old native of San Carlos City, Cebu.
Pe?alosa will get $15,000 in his fight against Rojas.
