This is the third installment of “Ask Geno,” the RSR Mailbag. You people are really making me work this week, but whatever you can dish out, I can take. I’m not going to sit back and pick and choose the questions that I find favorable. I’m an all or nothing type of guy. That’s why I always lose at the slots. I look at that fancy car spinning around amid countless slot machines and every time that I hit that spin button, I get closer and closer to driving home in that new sports car. I could leave my 1993 Chevy Cavalier right in the casino parking lot and drive away in style. I never win though. Maybe somebody can pimp my ride. Have you seen that horrible show? They take a clunker and put an X Box in the trunk for some reason, and new rims and a new stereo. Most of these stereos are better than mine. I have an AM/FM stereo that has this scan feature. It finds stations while you drive. It’s freaking crazy how technology has taken off…and they have better stereos if you can believe that! They give your car a paint job and put those racing seats in there, where your bucket seats used to be. I would need racing seats. My car goes up to 50 MPH…it’s pretty quick.
I have noticed that there are only 2 topics that people discuss nowadays: the weather and the price of gasoline. I meet a lot of new people and every day that I see them, they either bring up the gas prices or the weather. Is this what our country has become? We have become so politically correct that we are now afraid to talk about anything other than gasoline and the weather. If I mention that my dad can’t be trusted alone with a vacuum, I get a couple of days off of work and my job’s in jeopardy. My dad is an obsessive-compulsive, neat freak and would have turned that vacuum on and cleaned. What did you think I meant?
I hate salesmen for the most part. Whenever I want to buy a new car or even a new television, all of a sudden, I have a new best friend. It’s conditional love. If I don’t purchase something, they give me that look…a look that screams: If I could, I would kick you in the grapes. I know that this isn’t boxing related, but I want people to be real. Keep it real. You know what I’m saying? Okay, now that I’m done ranting and raving, let me get to part IIIof this fabulous mailbag…
PBF VS. THE GOLDEN ONE

I think that the Mayorga win was an illusion. We were all duped…at least I was. When the bout was first announced, I thought that it was a mismatch that De La Hoya would easily win because of his advantage in skill. Then, as time went on, I began to buy into the hype and began to think that De La Hoya would run in there and trade punches out of anger and anything could happen. Because we all thought like that, the win was that much more impressive, and now people are demanding a PBF showdown.
Now, Shane Mosley defeated De La Hoya twice with speed and PBF is a better fighter and has more in his bag of tricks. De La Hoya is older and slower. This is a very tough fight for “The Golden Boy” and one that I would make him a big underdog. I think that PBF might even stop him along the way. As for Pacman facing PBF…not a good idea. Pacman is 130 pounds now. PBF has been beating 147 pounders. I can’t see a scenario where Pacquiao wins this one, but I will say this. PBF has had his most trouble with southpaws (Corley, Judah), and if Manny could make that work for him and keep the pressure on without getting knocked out along the way, he might have a chance, but I would still heavily favor Mayweather, JR.

Dmitriy Salita, “The Star of David” was a star on the rise, but you’re right. He has fallen off the prospect radar. At, 24-0-1, 14 KO’s, he still has to be considered, but he has been down three times in his last two fights and took a few steps back in his last fight that ended as a draw against the unheralded Ramon Montano. I won’t count him out yet because he’s got a lot of skill and heart, but his chin may not be that good.
Heavy metal fan, huh? Don’t you know that Satan is sending subliminal messages in that filth? I love Heavy Metal music man and Guns N Roses used to be really good. I don’t know what Axl Rose can do without them and I saw him perform live and I wasn’t impressed. Now, do you want to know what the ultimate band is: Iron Maiden. I freaking love maiden, King Diamond/Mercyful Fate, Judas Priest, and Danzig. I am stuck in the 80’s somewhat, but I do listen to new stuff as well…and oldies. When I was a kid, my mother would play oldies all of the time and I still like them to this day. I’m very disappointed with Bon Jovi. Sure, they were a weak band, but now that they are singing country music, it turns my stomach. Have you listened to the ridiculous and thoughtless lyrics of Bon Jovi’s new tune: “Who Says You Can’t Go Home?” Here is a sample: Who says you can’t go back, been all around the world and that’s a matter of fact. Bernard Hopkins did a great job against an overrated champion. It was the skill and ring generalship more than anything that defeated Tarver. A lot of people will say the weight fluctuation of Tarver was the reason why he didn’t perform well at all. I am sorry to report that Tarver is a good fighter with a big punch that caught up with RJJ when he had nothing left and struggled with Glen Johnson. He is not a PPV attraction and neither is Hopkins if I’m being honest here. Hopkins-Taylor were horrible PPVs, and De La Hoya sold the Hopkins bout that he was in. Bernard is not an attraction no matter what HBO is trying to shove down our throats. Shame on HBO for being deceitful and using false advertising. It’s bad enough that they are putting out bad cards and putting a 50 dollar price tag on them, but to present it as a good card when they know that they are going to cure insomnia, is wrong.
HBO reminds me of one of those tag sales where all the items are heavily overpriced. “How much for this flowbee?” “That’ll be five hundred dollars.” 500 smackers for a flowbee? For the uninformed, a flowbee is a device that you hook on the end of a vacuum and it cuts hair. Have you ever been to one of those tag sales? What about those tag sales that, for some reason, sell used underwear? What the hell is with that? Who buys that? There are certain items that you purchase new and panties fall into that category, don’t you think? One of these days, I’m going to haggle over the price of those panties. “How much?”
“Fifty cents.”
“No, you’re going to have to do better than that. You’ve worn those at least twenty times. I’ll give you twenty cents. Deal or no Deal?”

I think that they are bringing him along at the right pace. He defeated DeMarcus Corley, Mohamad Abdulaev, and Paulie Malignaggi, which is impressive in my book. He still hasn’t had that defining fight, but if he faces Jose Luis Castillo, we have a fight on our hands gentlemen and ladies. Cotto has been building up to a big bout by facing reasonable competition and fighting his way to victory. I am a fan of Cotto’s. He is an exciting fighter that will not take no for an answer. He still has some defensive problems that I see, but you can’t dispute his strength. I don’t think he should face a sharpshooter like PBF, but Ricky Hatton is made to face him. They need to face each other. I will keep up the good work. As my wife always says in regards to me: “Keep it up? You’re talking to the wrong guy,” whatever that means. She’s my wife and she loves me, so I know that it has to be positive.

The WBO is a legitimate belt? Okay, I have done research…and I have come up empty handed, but I will say that, as far as I know, a championship is a prerequisite to being placed on top of the P4P list, and the ones that have been there without titles have been in between titles. When they move up and vacate to challenge for a title in another weight class, they are now strictly challengers but are still on the list. Okay, what’s next…you want to discuss what’s under their belts. Sorry, you have us confused with another type of website. We are strictly boxing.

Okay, on to my question. There’s a boxer out there who’s been gaining recognition by the name of Joan Guzman (girl’s name) and I read he’s a hard puncher. A friend of mine once saw him fight on T.V. and says this Joan guy is a real bad-ass. He’s on the featherweight level right now and might move up to challenge the PACMAN or Barrios. Do you think he’s going to be a formidable opponent for either of the two? Also, have you watched Guzman fight?

Joan Guzman, 25-0, 17 KO’s, is currently fighting at 130 pounds and is in a position to make some big things happen. He has fought good opposition lately, but he hasn’t been able to get them out of there. He has 4 straight decisions, but they have been good wins. I have only seen clips of him in action, when he was a Super Bantamweight and he seemed like a big puncher and very strong, but at lightweight, he’s probably not as effective. He is still winning bouts though, against very good opposition. The money is in the lightweight division with names like Corrales, Freitas, and Casamayor. I wouldn’t tell him that he has a girl’s name though, Al. I do think that he has a formidable opponent for anyone from Super Bantamweight to Lightweight.
The mailbag is growing and it may just become a daily thing because what the RSR readers want, they get…within reason. I just don’t want some random guy showing up at my doorstep with flowers and saying: “I’m an RSR Reader and guess what I want…you said what we want, we get, right?” I just wanted to clear it up because you never know.

I will not rent it, but I don’t think that it is available in the states. I would like to see it, but I have been shelling out too much for boxing PPVs. Pacquiao is so loved that I’m sure that it will be rented by the fans that can afford it. He is like George Foreman…very loved. So, I will wager that it will sell pretty well. The thing with Pacman is that he is never in a dull fight and that alone will probably sell the event. I, personally, would like to see all bouts except for the incredibly important ones stay on the networks or the pay cable channels. Why subscribe to HBO if they put every single bout is placed on PPV?

Do you know that a lot of friends have to forego their planned long weekend vacations because of Pacman’s fight? I myself, and six family friends have to cancel our camping just to watch his fight. I have cancelled many plans for fight weekends. My ex-girlfriend had plans to go to Cape Cod in Massachusetts and I didn’t realize that the Mike Tyson-Bruce Seldon PPV was that weekend. Now, I had two ways to handle this. Either tell her that I would rather watch Mike Tyson go for another title, or lie. So, I did the right thing. I told her that I was violently ill and I would have to postpone. “Do you want me to come over,” she asked. “Oh no…I need sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.” Well, I watched the fight, which blew, and went to bed. The next day, my ex asked me: “Did you know that Tyson fought last night?” I played dumb: “Really? Damn…I missed it. What happened?” She saw right through me and actually asked me to press play on my VCR, where the PPV recording was located. Needless to say, she did not buy my: Sleepwalking/renting PPV/recording PPV theory. “I must have done it in my sleep…I was pretty sick after all.” That relationship didn’t work out.
I think that the Pacman is a bigger name than Flash Elorde because of that element that the boxing fans crave: KO power. He is huge in the Philippines for sure, and is big in the states as well. Elorde is well respected, but I think that the Pacman is going to be the man that goes down in history as the Filipino boxer that made a bigger splash worldwide.

News (here in the Philippines) broke out that PBF is considering a fight with Pacman at 135lb in the near future. It says that this will be Pacman’s biggest break ever and PBF is willing to trim down to 135 just to fight PAC. Is there any truth to this? I mean will PBF go out of his way just to fight PAC? Do you think Pacman has a chance against this guy at 135 no matter how remote that chance maybe?
Lastly, will Team Pacquiao accept this bout if ever it will be offered to them? I think Pac has everything to gain in this bout (although the risk of getting beaten to a pulp is definitely there) mainly because if he beats PBF, he can claim to be the best and if he loses everybody will say that PBF is just too big for him considering that he was once a flyweight. Plus the fact that he will gain millions of US$ with this bout.and anyway nobody from the so called boxing experts will believe that Pac can beat PBF so it will be o.k. to lose} What do you think?

How are you doing my friend? If PBF should move down to 135, which I make highly unlikely at this point, he puts his undefeated record in jeopardy. He looks pretty solid at 147, but if he does come down, that right there is Pacman’s chance. Fighters in the past have shown that when they put on weight and then take it off, especially when it is muscle, they lose a lot of their strength and endurance. Orlin Norris, RJJ, and Jose Luis Castillo all come to mind. If PBF does elect to drop the weight and pursue the Pacman, thinking that he will be easy prey because he has taken on bigger men, he may be in for a surprise. If I were part of Team Mayweather, JR., I would pass on a bout with Manny for just that reason. Should Manny move up…he will most likely lose. Should Mayweather, JR., move down, we’ve got a fight on our hands.
I would love to release our movies (www.xposse.com) in the Philippines and worldwide if possible. Everything looks positive for our new one: “Rise of the Scarecrows,” but talk is cheap and we’ll have to see if the people can come through for us. I want to put out a film that is different than most and that people can enjoy and walk away quoting lines from the movie. I think that we have the right product, and once we get that going, we can focus on the boxing movie that I’m in the middle of writing: “The Root of All Evil.” It is sort of like Dirty Harry meets boxing, and it covers the corruption that goes along with the game. In a perfect world, we will be able to get a budget to create this and entertain the masses. This is a personal quest of mine because I have many friends that need that break and if X Posse Productions takes off…they will get their break. So, hopefully I will be in the Philippines one day for the premier….and hopefully a Pacquiao bout as well.

What’s up? Larios is a tough customer. He will not be going in there to lose and he is not a small guy either. He is three inches taller than Manny and is not use to losing. In his last bout, even though he was on the ground in the first round, he fought on and faired well until it was stopped in the third. I suspect that the plan is to box Manny…use some of the tricks that JMM employed, but the problem with that strategy is that Pacman has improved since that bout and has some new tricks. The lead right hook and the body work are going to be tough for Larios to overcome…and what happens when he gets hit? I make Larios an underdog, but he is a live underdog. He will do his best and if Pacman is looking ahead and underestimates this guy, he could be setting himself up for a fall. I am still picking Manny by KO in 3.

I have been reading your articles, but I think this will be the first time I’d be commenting on something. Like those Mexican fighters you have mentioned, he has also been into a lot of wars with top caliber opponents and as you have rightfully mentioned, he never was in the position to choose his opposition. He is now in that position to choose and to make money. I really don’t think it is wise for team Pacman to move up in weight at this point in time… maybe at the twilight of his career, but not now.
I’d really love to see a rematch against Juan Manuel Marquez because a victory against him would certainly erase all the doubts of non-believers. That kind of victory, I believe would be a great manifestation of his greatness. What’s your take about this one?

Out of all the recent Pacman opponents, JMM seemed to create a good strategy to confuse Manny and survive. We all saw what happened in the first round when JMM said: “I’m going to stand up to this guy and show him who has the grapes!” Well, three knockdowns later, there was a change of plans. He really did a good job of composing himself, and nobody can dispute the heart of Marquez. The fight was competitive after the first round came and went, but I still thought that Pacman clearly won. The judges may have just been in awe that JMM was still in there and doing better. A draw was the wrong call, I believe.
I don’t think that we will see a rematch. Marquez may not want it because, quite frankly, he took 12 rounds of a beating in 3 minutes of the first round and fought for his dear life for 11 more. He can have an easier go at it if he takes on lesser competition. If he fought MAB at this stage of his career, it would be a big fight for him and the fact that MAB doesn’t seem to have much left, he will probably walk away with the biggest win of his career. There is a lot of appeal to a JMM-Pacman rematch, but health is more important than money and JMM knows that he is risking his life in there against Manny. His pride won’t allow him to stay down and if he’s going to lose, he’s going to take a vicious beating. If the referee allows it to go too long…anything can happen, and JMM doesn’t seem to want to take that chance, and rightfully so. I’ve compared it to Mike Tyson not fighting Lennox Lewis in a rematch. The most money was in a rematch with Lewis, but the risk to his health was too much to gamble with. I have friends that used to say: I would fight Mike Tyson…put that money on the table. Well, what if he gets you against the ropes, and you are hung up there? You are probably dead. A million dollars is something that you can’t take with you.
So if JMM isn’t available, and he beats Larios and EM in the rubber match, there isn’t much to choose from. He could face Jorge Barrios or Rocky Juarez, should he get past MAB in the rematch as many believe that he will. If not, the lightweight division has some good and reasonable opponents that he might want to look into.

Strength, power, and speed is no problem with Pacman. I think the future problem for Pacquiao is the people that surround him, that are trying to manipulate his career. Manny is a priced boxer and people around him know that they will get gold in him, so now they are now fighting for money and not for Manny.
If I am for Pacman, I will learn a lot how to manage his self so that he is the one to control his career, just like Oscar De La Hoya. For you Manny: you are always our champion and the best super featherweight in the world. Mabuhay ka and good luck in your fight against Oscar Larios!!!! More power!!!

I am a Tyson fan…big time, and I remember a time when he said that if having what he has now is everything, he’d rather have a lot less. He said this when he was rolling in money and fame. When you reach that point, the sharks come out and they are after one thing: your money. The Pacman is facing the same problem. He is a superstar and it is well-deserved, but you are going to have those unscrupulous individuals that are going to give the advice that best suits them and not the fighter.
For Manny: if there is an issue that is causing a distraction and/or costing him money that it shouldn’t, maybe going the De La Hoya route is the way to go. I hate how people leach off others just to line their own pockets. It happens everywhere you go. The love of money is the root of all evil my friend.

I agree with you Chico is Pac’s worst nightmare, and would not be bothered if they never fight at all, but just like you would love to see Manny against Chico, but IMHO, Pac should first try the likes of Barrios and Freitas first…
I think PAC versus Chico is comparable to Duran against Tommy “The Hitman” Hearns: a very scary outcome for the smaller man

I think that no matter who Pacman fights, it’s going to be an attraction. He is one of the very few superstars that we have at this point. That is why the De La Hoya-Mayorga bout sold so many PPVs. Oscar is a superstar and when you don’t have that many, you will pay to see them in action. A match between Freitas and Pacquiao would be HUGE. Both have enormous fan bases and both present unusual punches that usually lead them to victory. Pac’s timing and straighter punches would lead him to a victory over Popo in my opinion.
Hearns-Duran is a great comparison for sure. Duran is an all time great, but Hearns was huge and had unnatural punching power. The guy started at what, 147? And he carried a knockout punch to the cruiserweight division? Hearns obliterated Duran in an amazing show of power, and I would not want to see Pacman get the same fate. The Chico bout is a big gamble and would be a tall order for the much smaller fighter.

I believe that PACMAN should build his career in 130LBS, lightweight is too much for him. I don’t think that he can manage that weight. He must be a world titleholder first in Super featherweight before choosing the higher weight, but still I’m not quite sure he can handle the lightweight. Even Erik Morales cannot handle the 135lbs.

Octopus going crazy and throwing cars and such. The Green Goblin is badass too. I cannot wait for the third entry and for them to reveal the next bad guy that Spiderman is going to face. I was going to call myself “Spider Bambino,” but it just wasn’t catchy enough. So, Spideyman…let’s get to your comments.
At 130 pounds, Pacman can’t be beat. At 135, there is the drama and that’s why the fans are clamoring for it. When RJJ was on top of the LH division, the fans wanted him to move up to heavyweight because there was a chance that he could lose and his talent was too big for the light heavyweight division. I get the same feeling here with the Pacster. If he stays at 130, I wonder if he will be criticized for not going after bigger challenges? Probably not, but he is definitely the dominant force at 130. As for Erik Morales: He wasn’t a strong puncher at 130….at 135, he’s not going to gain pop in his shots. If you move up, you better be a great boxer or a good puncher, or you will lose.

Now, if you can get past the horrible acting of the former WWE star, they have this scene where Piper gets these magical sunglasses that can see subliminal messages clearly. Now, I want money for sure, but if you compromise who you are to get it or get it by hurting others…well, Karma is going to bite you in the tushy. Thanks for the compliments and I am glad that people are reading my mailbag and enjoying it. I aim to please. Now, to answer your question: I think that the 3rd encounter between these two warriors might just be the best of them all. Morales will try to employ some of the things that worked for him in the first bout…use the reach and keep the Pacman away. Pacquiao will try to use the body work and lead right hook that were so effective and also, the intimidation factor. EM was KO’d the last time around…beaten into submission. That has to be on his mind as we go into this one. So, I would say that Pacman wins it with a middle round stoppage in a crazy and action-packed fight.

I have been reading about Pac fighting Chico and I’m one of the biggest Pacfans because I’m a Filipino and a member of Pacland, but I think that Pac should not go and fight Chico Corrales in the near future. He is bigger than MAB, EM, or any other Super Featherweight. As you have said, he has a pair of bombs in his hand. I agree with you: Pac and Chico are both powerful, but they should not collide. It’s so simple: Chico is bigger than Pac, but some other guy insisted that Pac could handle him and I find the chances not so good.
