The first episode of the highly anticipated SHOWTIME Sports series ALL ACCESS: MAYWEATHER vs. CANELO debuted tonight in the lead-up to the September 14 showdown between undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather and undefeated jr. middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. For those fans awaiting the return of Floyd Mayweather and his larger-than-life personality, it did not disappoint. “The main name in the sport right now in boxing, no matter how you cut it, slice it and dice it, there’s only one name that counts, and that’s Floyd Mayweather…I’m what you call once in a lifetime…You already know, I only come around once in a lifetime. I’m almost 40 years old and I’m still going strong,” Mayweather would comment, making it clear that Canelo will be number 45 on his unblemished record. Check out what else Floyd Mayweather had to say in episode 1 of All Access: Mayweather vs. Canelo.
On his upcoming showdown with Canelo…
The main name in the sport right now in boxing, no matter how you cut it, slice it and dice it, there’s only one name that counts, and that’s Floyd Mayweather.
I’m what you call once in a lifetime.
Every time I was going out and fighting on pay-per-view, they was always putting this guy on my undercard, you know, building him up and building his name up.
He had a chance to build a great fan base, you know, fighting on my undercard and making a lot of noise.
This is boxing. The best need to fight the best, and if I’m the best and he’s one of the best guys out there in the sport of boxing, the best thing for us to do is make the fight happen.
On Canelo…
Canelo’s 22. I’ve been at the top since Canelo’s been 5 years old, so I think he’s going to see it’s a lot different on this level. I’ve been here before.
Every fighter always talk about, “We got the remedy. We going to be Mayweather. We got the remedy.” Shut up! Can’t no fucking fighter beat me. “We got the remedy.” Motherfucker, I am boxing.
Canelo, he’s banking on his youth, and me, myself, I have a lot of experience.
I can make adjustemtns and I can adapt. That plays a major key in a big fight.
Every fighter I face that’s undefeated, I put an L on they record.
With me and Canelo, I’m old enough to be his father.
It makes me feel good that a guy like Canelo was young coming up watching me. He of course admired me as a kid. I seen him fight a few times, I seen him roll his shoulder, I seen him try to use some of my defensive moves, and my job is to go out there and just don’t let him use none of my moves on me.
On his team…
I love my uncle, and, you know, I love my father. We have a great team. We work good together. Me and my uncle Roger, in the boxing gym, I think we still sharp. My dad, he’s a great guy. In the past, we wasn’t on the same page, but now, you know, we’re on the same page. He respects my opinion and I respect his opinion.
It’s crazy, everybody wants to box Floyd Mayweather, but sometimes you ask for certain things that you don’t really want.
On being a promoter…
Being a promoter, I truly believe the fighters should win in the long run because the fighters are taking all the risk.
I can see how fighters look at certain promoters because I was on the other side at one particular time. Now I’m on both sides of the table.
Anything can happen in a fight. Mickey Bey, he just got his first loss. Hopefully it was a learning experience. That’s why you gotta prepare all around the board. I can’t overlook no opponent and I’m thankful that I’ve been able to ride the wave for such a long time.
More on Canelo…
He wants my number one spot. He’s a guy I know that I can’t overlook.
I’m the number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
You already know, I only come around once in a lifetime. I’m almost 40 years old and I’m still going strong.
