Fight legend, celebrity, Olympics star and promoter Oscar De La Hoya is back in rehab.
He will not attend, ‘Mayweather vs Canelo: The One,’ which may prove to be his company’s biggest fight card to date and one of the most celebrated in the last 20 years. “Canelo Alvarez and I have big fights coming up this weekend,” De La Hoya said in a statement released earlier today.
“His is the ring and mine in treatment.”
The Golden Boy added:
“I will not be at the fight to cheer Canelo to victory since I have voluntarily admitted myself into a treatment facility.”
“I explained this to Canelo and he understood that my health and long-term recovery from my disease must come first. Thank you for your understanding. I ask for your support and privacy during this difficult time for me and my family.”
The substance (or substances) plaguing Oscar is not yet publicly known but he’s an admitted alcoholic and has had a cocaine problem in the past. The 40 year old Oscar De La Hoya, whose net worth is purportedly $175 Million, first admitted himself to a substance-rehabilitation facility in Spring 2011.
His overall tone today is not much different than it was a little over 2 years ago .
In May 2011, he stated, “After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws….”
In an August 2011 post-rehab interview, Oscar said cocaine and alcohol had tormented him since 2008, insisting the drugs made him feel safe and protected from the insults of the outside world.
De La Hoya, who briefly considered a comeback in 2011, has defeated 17 world champions and has won 10 world titles in six different weight classes. He has also generated more revenue than any other boxer in the history of the sport, an estimated $696 Million in pay-per-view income alone.
In 2001, Oscar De La Hoya founded Golden Boy Promotions and became the first American of Hispanic descent to own a national boxing promotional firm.
Oscar’s promotional company, more notably for its work this this year, has received widespread acclaim from the fight community for its matchmaking prowess and fan-friendly fight cards.
