According to the Manilastandardtoday.com, Floyd Mayweather is considering fighting Manny Pacquiao. The website claims that Eric Buhain, the chairman of the Games and Amusements Board (a public agency that handles professional sporting and gambling events in the Philippines) has said that Mayweather Jr. would not be opposed to fighting the Filipino star.
Buhain was quoted as saying; “It’s going to be a blockbuster. Our friends in the world boxing council tipped this to us, and if plans push through, this would be the biggest break for Manny.”
What Buhain has to do with Manny Pacquiao is any ones guess (there seem to be at least 100 people classified as ‘business associates’, or ‘partners’ of the power punching Pac Man), but it is an interesting idea.
However, seeing as Pacquiao can still make the 126lb limit, and Mayweather has been fighting at 147lbs, there is probably more chance of James Toney coming back down to light heavyweight to fight Bernard Hopkins.
It is also unlikely that Mayweather cannot find a more suitable opponent, even though his bout with Oscar Delahoya has fallen through. Beating up a man who won his first title at 112 lbs would do little for his status, and would open him to more criticism that he is not willing to take fights he could actually lose.
The rumor, of course, could be complete nonsense. But this is boxing, and crazier things have happened.
