Not Just Boxing Fans In September, Floyd Mayweather is going to fight Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez in what could be the highest money generating fight in history. Of course, this fight will capture the interest of hardcore boxing fans but most of the interest and revenue will be generated by casual fans and ordinary people who may watch only a fight or two per year.
Mayweather vs Canelo, like the Super Bowl in the U.S., will be a mega event.
Mexicans and Mexican-Americans Love Boxing – And Are Supportive There’s a huge market for Mexican fighters due to the Mexican community’s love for, and success in, the sport. Elite Mexican fighters will always get great support from Mexican fans. And Saul Alvarez isn’t just another good Mexican fighter. Although he is untested in many ways, if he learns to use his abilities the right way and at the right times, he will be a great Mexican fighter. Along with the huge market for Alvarez, there is an even bigger market for anybody who can hand Floyd Mayweather his first loss.
Canelo’s Appeal: Bigger Than Oscar’s The record for pay per view buys is DeLaHoya-Mayweather with close to 2.5 million buys. Although Alvarez is coming into this bout without the experience or the accomplishments DeLa Hoya had in 2007, Alvarez has more appeal to Mexican fans than DeLaHoya. He speaks Spanish in his interviews, he’s from Mexico, and he hasn’t crossed over to American culture the way Oscar did. A lot of fans felt betrayed by Oscar because of the image he portrayed in and out of the ring. Some believed he was too Americanized.
Undefeated There is something that catapults the interest in a fight when neither fighter has lost. Both fighters are undefeated and have seemingly been unstoppable in recent years. Mayweather is 44-0 with 26 KOs while Alavez is 41-0-1 with 30 KOs.
Undercard Another bonus for the fans in this event is the undercard. Lucas Matthyse and Danny Garcia will fight to solidify the 140 pound title. This fight could be a huge main event all by itself. Both Matthyse and Garcia will make 7 figures as undercard attractions which I don’t believe has ever happened before.
