When it comes to the sport of boxing, there may not be anyone who hates Floyd Mayweather quite as much as Manny Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach. With that in mind, does he believe Canelo Alvarez will pull off the upset when the two face off on Sept. 14?
“I think that is a very, very good boxing match. It’s not a great fight; it’s a good boxing match. Mayweather is a beautiful boxer and I think Mayweather will win a decision in that fight. I think a boxing fan will really like that fight but some people at home that like action might fall asleep. But it’s a great boxing match,” Roach said.

For years as Manny Pacquiao’s trainer, Roach claimed he knew how to defeat Mayweather. Nobody wanted to see Pacman in the ring against Money May more than Roach.
As good as Alvarez is, he does not have the skillset that Pacquiao possesses. Alvarez is very strong and physically bigger than Mayweather but he lacks the hand speed and ring experience that Roach believes will be needed to hand Money May his first loss as a professional boxer.
Unfortunately, we will likely never know if Roach knows something than nobody else does when it comes to defeated Mayweather. A couple years ago, a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather bout would have been the biggest sporting event in the world. Now that Pacquiao has lost to Juan Manuel Marquez and Timothy Bradley in back-to-back matches, not as many fight fans care to see him in the ring against Mayweather.
Maybe Pacquiao vs. Mayweather will happen eventually, but for right now we can all look forward to Alvarez vs. Mayweather which is already one of the most highly anticipated boxing matches in several years.
