I was watching a Beach Boys concert on PBS and they were singing: “Wouldn’t it Be Nice?” I think that they should stop singing that tune because it doesn’t make any sense. “Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older,” they sang. How much older do they want to get?!!! They’re in their sixties! Sorry about that people…I just wanted to share it with somebody and who better than with the RSR readers? This is the second mailbag that I have released this week and there will be one more. I know that some people wanted one mailbag per day and if this continues, their wish will be granted.
When is the heavyweight division going to fix itself people? I was watching some of the fights from my boxing collection and things were so much better when Evander Holyfield held the crown. Where did we go wrong? I don’t care for Holyfield, but he was recognized as the undisputed champion even if he didn’t have all three belts. Now, we have a group that nobody really cares about. I know that somebody is probably saying: “Up yours Geno…I love Nikolay Valuev!” By the way, congrats to our WBA Heavyweight Champion on his successful knockout defense against Owen “What the Heck” Beck. Thank God that his last name isn’t Buck.
So, I was watching the two Holyfield-Moorer bouts and I never noticed that “The Real Deal” had MC Hammer with him. He wasn’t wearing the parachute pants that he was famous for though. That was sort of disappointing. As much as Holyfield was a dirty fighter later in his career, he was something else when he was on top of his game. When he beat Bert Cooper, George Foreman, and came back to beat Riddick Bowe really showed how great this guy was. It’s a shame that he didn’t retire after the Lennox Lewis defeat, and it’s more of a shame that he is trying to win the world title again. So, which heavyweight now is the next Evander Holyfield, Mike Tyson, or Lennox Lewis? Sadly, I do not see one on the horizon.

This mailbag rocks ass. I think Calzaghe is overrated, what about you? He is a talented MW with fast hands that took advantage of a weak division. The guy fought NOBODY! The best boxers on his list are a one-dimensional brawler in Lacy and an old Chris Eubank. Its been proven over and over again that a boxer will always outpoint a brawler, look at Peter-Klitschko, Mayweather-Gatti, and De La Hoya-Mayorga. Yet all these guys are overrating Calzaghe like he is the best. Put him in there with Tarver, Johnson, Adamek, Winky Wright and Jermain Taylor and see how he does. What do you think of these fighter’s chances against him? I think they will all crush him. Calzaghe was over-protected like all European fighters.
Now, I also would like to know, is there any difference between Miguel Cotto and Tito? I think Cotto is the Millennium reincarnation of Trinidad.
My last question is, how do you beat Sultan Ibragimov? The guy seems unstoppable, super-fast hands, yet he does seem a bit doughy though. I wonder who can stop him, since he seems to be the one guy that can tear through the heavyweight picture RIGHT NOW! Wasn’t that Yokozuna’s finishing move? You know, he was that fat sumo wrestler guy in the WWE? Joe Calzaghe…overrated? I don’t really think so. I was one of the few that picked him to defeat Jeff Lacy and I was RIGHT! They don’t call me an “expert” for nothing. He’s not Marvin Hagler by any means, but I think that he is very skilled. I do have questions about his chin and I’m sure that certain fighters would exploit it, but not Jermain Taylor. I will start with him. I would flat out pick Calzaghe to defeat Taylor because he is consistent…the same reason that I picked him over Lacy. I would also pick him to beat Winky Wright, Glen Johnson, and Tomasz Adamek. Antonio Tarver might be too big for Joe at this time and the power would probably exploit the weaker chin.
There is a BIG difference between Felix Trinidad and Miguel Cotto. Trinidad, in my opinion, is one of the greatest boxers of all time despite the losses to Hopkins and Wright. His bouts with Yory Boy Campus, Fernando Vargas, David Reid, and Oba Carr are some of my favorite fights of all time. I consider him far more talented than Cotto, but they do both share something: heart. Watching Cotto get off the canvas in his recent bouts and come back to win makes you think of the times that Trinidad did the same. Cotto is a star. He is like Arturo Gatti with more skill. I am a big Cotto fan because he is good for boxing.
Sultan Ibragimov is something else. I wrote an article a while back where I listed him as the #12 guy in the heavyweight division. He knocked out Mount Whitaker, which is an accomplishment and he’s undefeated. He also has a lot of ambition and that is sorely needed in the division. I want to see him box a few more times before I proclaim him to be the best…and you are right. Tyson was the man indeed

First off, how disappointing was the cancellation of Castillo-Corrales III? What a bunch of malarkey! Castillo has insulted the boxing community! Well I’ll just move on to the real question because I’m sure you will get mounds of Castillo hate mail.
I was on a website watching some older fights…and happened to view Mayweather-Castillo I. It made me wonder, how often do these so called “gift decisions” occur? What are some of the most blatant gift decisions you’ve witnessed?

I was sincerely disappointed by Castillo. Diego Corrales looked ready to cry, he was so angry and I don’t blame him. He trained long and hard for this bout and to have Castillo disgrace himself and the sport like that and screwing “Chico” out of all that money is wrong. Then when Castillo said that he was disappointed that Corrales “didn’t want to fight.”
Okay, I scored the first Castillo-Mayweather, JR. even when I watched it recently. It could have gone either way, but it told me something. Antonio Margarito is going to beat PBF. It’s no wonder that Floyd is screaming: “Forget Margarito…bring on De La Hoya!” Let’s see…the most blatant gift decisions that I have scene. I’ll break it down to 10.

I was the guy who wrote you about Lederman having a hard on for Klitschko, I mistakenly said Merchant instead of Lederman.
Now the reason for writing I never believed in the auto. 8 count because I really feel given the fighter a little more time he is subject to more blows to the head instead of a TKO or KO.
The second thing I don’t agree with is the reach department from under the shoulder it’s deceiving, The Klitschko and Peter it should be taken from the neck as in this case Klitschko has a longer base from the shoulder to the neck than Peter so therefore the reach is definitely much longer.

No problem. I am not completely comfortable with the “hard on” slang. I think that it is a wee bit excessive. Now, the standing eight count…There are pros and cons to it, but overall, I think that the standing eight count takes away from the flow of the fight and of course, could lead to more punches landed on the hurt fighter.
Length? Hard on? Ponko, what sort of website do you think that we’re running? I don’t care if Peter is longer. It’s not the size of the boat anyway…it’s the motion of the ocean. As Christopher Cross once sang: “Sailing…it takes me away…” I have a friend that loves this guy, but I don’t see the appeal. Whenever I listen to his music, I say to myself: “This guy has been kicked in the grapes far too many times.” One man’s garbage is another man’s treasure for sure and if my friend, and I won’t mention his name, because there aren’t many Cross fans that want their identity revealed. Now boxing fans, bare with me on this one, please. The movie: “Paradise Lost” concerns three young boys that are placed into prison for a crime that they supposedly did not commit. Now, Sag, I understand that documentaries can be spun and certain elements can be left out, but the West Memphis Three, from what I have read, which have been a lot of independent articles and evidence leads me to believe that they were wrongfully convicted. I don’t like to scream: “Conspiracy” when somebody claims to be innocent, but I believe that presentation is everything, and that the juries for their trials were tainted by their own imaginations. I truly believe that they are 100% innocent from what I’ve investigated. So, I have to say it again: Free the West Memphis 3!

WHAT’S THAT SOUND?

Hello! I’ve been reading your mailbag for quite some time now, and I always end up entertained because of the way you handle boxing questions.
As for my questions, the first one is about boxing sounds. Whenever I watch fights on my crappy laptop (I have no T.V…I’m poor), I’d see a boxer throw a punch that seems to miss, but there’s this “WHIIISSSHHH” sound made with each punch. Were those sounds made by the boxer’s heavy breathing or from the punch itself hitting nothing but air?
The second question I have is about legal blows. I’ve been reading this boxing comic book (Manga actually) called “Hajime No Ippo,” and one of the champions used a “Corkscrew Blow” directed to the opponent’s heart to cause temporary paralysis. Another boxer used a “Solar Plexus Blow” aimed near the diaphragm or something. Are these hits legal in real life boxing?

How are you doing my friend? You have a laptop and you’re poor? Some homeless guy right now is probably saying: “Forget You!” I consider myself poor too, but not as bad as I used to be. I used to eat Ramen Noodle Soup and Macaroni and Cheese every day for about a year. Now, I live like a king in comparison. The wife and I can actually go out to dinner and have desert if we so please. Why do old people eat dog food? Have you heard this? Elderly people that are having financial woes eat dog food because it’s cheaper, they say. My grandfather used to eat dog food. He said he did it to get “that horrible taste out of his mouth.” I don’t know what I meant by that. Anyway, my grandmother, his wife, was a great person too. They had a great relationship.
I have never heard of the “Corkscrew Punch,” but the punch to the solar plexus is known as one of the most affective shots in boxing. It takes the life right out of most fighters if it lands correctly. That punch is certainly legal. Also, thanks for the props on the mailbag!

The other mailbags that have banned Filipinos or anyone for that matter are idiots. I’m not impressed with their bags anyway. Sometimes I compare and I see what they are doing and I’m puzzled by why they even get any emails to begin with. Going to hell is a little bit strong, but a kick in the grapes would be nice.
I would heavily favor PBF to defeat De La Hoya. Ricardo Mayorga was too wide of a puncher to really test “The Golden Boy” and he will need to be sharper than he’s been in years in order to defeat the current best in the game. When you figure in the time away from the game, and the level that PBF is currently at, you have to make De La Hoya the underdog. PBF by wide decision.
THE REMOVAL OF THE QUIET MAN

I don’t know all of the specifics, but John Ruiz has been removed either by choice of by the promotional power of Don King from the IBF Title eliminator against Sultan Ibragimov. Replacing him will be Ray Austin…so we may as well congratulate Ibragimov right now. The Ruiz fight was very intriguing, but it wasn’t meant to be. At this time, Ruiz has no immediate plans and no opponents have been rumored to be the next to face him. So, I have no answer regarding his next fight. I can say that Ray Austin is average at best and will not defeat Ibragimov. For the first time in my life, I want to see Ruiz fight…imagine that!
BOXER SUPPORT THAT HAS GONE TOO FAR

I just wanted to reply to your perceptive (and accurate) comment about the Hatton fans having “invested” so much in Ricky. I am actually very proud of Ricky and I think he will be remembered among the great light-welters.
My point here is that, whilst I positively loved Barry McGuigan, by the final bell in his fight with Steve Cruz, I felt it would be unfair is Barry retained his title when he had lost the fight. I actually cried that night but I could not begrudge Stevie Cruz his victory, a newly wedded Texas plumber had fought a great fight and might actually be able to make some money to which he could support his family.
The sort of xenophobic “backlash” you have been subjected to is the sort of thing that caused the riots after Hagler-Minter and Nelson-Cowdell fights, when boxing fans began to resemble football fans.
There was a beautiful documentary on UK TV a while ago in which Johhny Owen’s Father met with Lupe Pintor and this resulted in Lupe visiting Johnny’s family in Wales and opening a memorial to the Welsh fighter. That, for me, is the major difference between boxing and other sports. At the end of a grueling fight, the two men involved will (99% of the time) show the class to acknowledge and respect their opponent.
I think most countries that once had empires have huge “chips on their shoulders” and don’t want to see objectivity. As a boxing writer, you are bound by objectivity or your writing would lose all meaning.

I love the support that fans show their fighter, but when it escalates to a riot or a situation where people get hurt, it has gone too far. The problem is when you get people that strongly live vicariously through sportsmen, they sometimes overreact to a loss, because they have just lost too. I remember the horrible events that occurred at the Riddick Bowe-Andrew Golota bout, where the stands erupted, thanks in part to Bowe’s idiot group that he brought with him. That @##$#head that attacked Golota with the CB Radio because his man and meal ticket lost should have been dealt with more severely. I couldn’t believe the negative energy that night. It was absurd.
It reminded me of those clips that they show of the Italian Soccer game when the referee has to run away to save his life. We haven’t gotten to that point in the states, but we have our moments. The riot when Hagler won against Minter was ridiculous. This is a sport and there should be no ill will after it is over, for the most part. The boxers usually shake hands and go on with their lives, but the fans are so pumped up. Thanks for realizing that for good or bad, I have to be objective and some people will not like what I’m saying. Disagreeing with me is one thing that I understand, but calling me a bigot or something to that effect is a cop out.

I have this immediate follow-up letter even before you have reacted on my questions/comments about Soviet fighters dominating the Heavyweight division.
Since you just commented that Pernell Whitaker is one of your favorites, I find it tempting to get your views about his fantasy fights againsts the best 135 to 147 lbs fighters in history such as Hearns, Leonard, Duran, Benitez, Pryor and Mayweather.
I think Pernell would lose to Hearns and Leonard by unanimous decision. I see Pernell lose a close one to Mayweather. But I think he will handily beat Duran with a U.D. and escape the Pryor challenge with a close decision.
Benitez-Whitaker will be chess match and might be too close for me to call. I hope you will have the time and energy to share your thoughts about these fantasy fights.
And yes, I also think Pernell’s a bit old when he fought De La Hoya. He could have beaten him easily in his prime.

I have never seen anyone as talented at Pernell Whitaker. He was a genius in the ring and, it seemed to me, that nobody could even touch him, but let me go down the list to see if you have changed my mind.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Sugar Ray Leonard: I like Whitaker in this one. Leonard is fast enough to compete, but the defense and ring savvy of Sweet Pea would lead to a UD.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Thomas Hearns: This one is the wild card for me. Hearns is just so big and powerful that I would tend to lean toward him by a UD. Remember, Hearns could not only really punch, but he was an exceptional boxer.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Roberto Duran: Easy one. Pernell by huge UD.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Wilfred Benitez: A tough bout for Sweet Pea, but I still see him out-smarting Benitez over the distance.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Aaron Pryor: I am a fan of Aaron Pryor. He is truly one of the greatest of all time, but I have such a hard time going against Whitaker in this one. He makes tough fights easy with his skill and ring smarts. Whitaker by UD.
Pernell Whitaker vs. Floyd Mayweather, JR.: PBF is good, but he is not in the same universe as Whitaker. Whitaker takes every round in route to a UD.
THE PAC SACK

With regards to the proposed return bout between Pacman & Morales, I’ll bet my bottom dollar it will end the same way as the last even possibly shorter. Thanks for the props man! The possibilities are pretty good for Pacman taking the #1 spot, but PBF needs to lose or start performing badly because you can’t go against Floyd at this point in time. I have the Pacman at #2 on my list because of his wins over the great MAB and EM, and I consider the bout with JMM a win as well. As for Pacland…I check it out from time to time and to see the amount of fans this boxer has is amazing.

I think that punching power is for the most part, a natural gift that can be developed and improved, but for the most part, it is there or it’s not. Some fighters are just naturals like Joe Louis. You can’t create a Joe Louis. It’s not always about the most powerful punch. It’s also about delivery and timing. Tyson in his prime, and Pacman, have great timing, which is as important as the force behind the punch.

Geno, your boxing knowledge is a breath of fresh air…Can you kindly give Emanuel Steward a lesson on being an analyst please. Who’s your pick if Juarez and Pacman collide? They are both strong. Personally I think Pacman might outwork Juarez and dropped him late in the fight. Juarez is a little slow but always have the puncher’s chance. But they have the same manager right? Thanks and more power.

Yes, they do have the same manager, but let’s say that they face each other for argument’s sake, which is a possibility. Juarez showed some good things and some bad things in his bout with MAB. He proved that he was one of the best in the game, but he also showed a reluctance that cost him in the end. Standing directly in front of Barrera and not being active is one thing, but doing that with the Pacman is suicide. What Juarez has going for him is a good defense and short and accurate punches. Without question, this would be a very tough fight for Pacman, although I still lean toward picking him to win. The big question is: Can Juarez take the Pacman’s punch? If he can, we will be in for an interesting night. I am wagering that he can’t and that he will be stopped later in the fight, but this is a fight where anything can happen.
I am a fan of Emanuel Steward and I think that his observations are pretty good. As always, boxing is subjective and sometimes he says things that I disagree with, but what I like about him is that he doesn’t have the HBO agenda. He will stand up to Lampley and Merchant.

Pacman dropping sparring partners is not a surprise. I remember when I used to backyard box and drop my opponents like mad. Sure, they weren’t top notch sparring partners, but they were pretty darn good…as good as an eighty year old man can be I guess. I had this rule. Before anyone dated my Nana, they had to step into the ring with me. I won all of those bouts, but I never went professional because I thought that they might force me to face people my own age. My Nana used to get a lot of play for an old gal.
Larios is probably concerned and excited. This is the biggest fighter of his career and if he wins, he will be swimming in money like our good friend, Scrooge McDuck. I love Duck Tales. It was a fantastic show.

I’m looking forward to it, but my grandfather (or lolo in tagalog, just a little Filipino lesson for you guys) said that when fight night comes, no one will show up!
I asked him why and he said: “People aren’t going to see a third fight. EM was badly beaten in the second fight so the people know that EM don’t have a chance. Everyone knows that when you get knocked out against your rival that your dealings with him are over… you lose period.”
I still think that it would be an exciting fight, and no doubt, I’m going to watch it. I just want to know if what he’s saying is true, that no one will show up in the third fight and stuff like that

I can see your Lolo’s point. To many, there isn’t that much intrigue because the second fight was so decisive, but I disagree. I think that there is a big chance that this fight will be the most exciting of them all. EM has something to prove and will fight hard and try to employ the tactics that he used in the first bout. Pacman will be trying to go after EM again and immediately try to remind him of what happened last time. I know that HBO will be putting it on HBO even though EM has lost three of his last four bouts and was stopped in his most recent one. I don’t think that this fight merits a PPV, but you know HBO. I’m surprised they don’t put a fifty dollar price tag on replays of “The Hitchhiker.” Do you remember that HBO program? A guy in skin tight jeans hitchhikes and tells a story. The stories were good, but did they really need to get a close up on this guy’s ass? You never saw the crypt keeper’s ass, and that show was far more successful. Tales from the Crypt ruled!
I think that the Pac-EM rubber match will be jam-packed. They both have many fans and they will support their men for sure.

With Jose Luis Castillo disgracing the sport and himself, I see the Pacman-Chico bout more likely than ever. I make Corrales a big favorite in this one. He is huge in comparison to Pacman and would just be too big. I see Corrales making short work of the Pacman, which is why he should stay at a lower weight. Remember, he began his career at 112 pounds and in this fight he would be facing a big 135 pound champion with dynamite in both fists. Although this is a big bout that will bring big money to both men, I still think that Pacman should avoid it and continue facing men his own size.

I have some thoughts of Eric M. and Marco Antonio B., for sure Marco’s days are numbered, but I kind a still undecided about the Pacman being able to pull through for their third encounter. If EM decided to fly like a dragon, and sting like an alien, he will surely win by decision. He can fight like the fight between Leonard and Hagler, stick to the job and avoid the counter. Eric’s durability to stay longer in the ring is over specially when he gets a beating by body shots, most specially to the sides, If he can withstand it, He wins.
As for Pacman, naturally, be prepared when Eric danced cha-cha. I think that’s the only way Eric could win aside from a lucky punch like Manny first tasted the canvas to a Filipino fighter. Well, that’s my thoughts as a boxing enthusiast. What do you comment on this Geno? More power amigo

Fly like a dragon and sting like an alien. Aliens do use probes I’ve heard and I’m sure that it would sting. I have never heard that saying before, but if more people used it, there would be more public demand against the Government to release those files that show aliens are probing our people. My dad is walking funny because of those little gray jerks…at least that’s what he tells me. Anyway, I don’t make it a 50-50 fight. I make it 70-30 in favor of the Pacman. The downward spiral that EM’s career has taken has led to three losses in his last four fights. I believe that every fighter has at least one great fight left, but I still believe that the Pacman will be too much.
