Pound-for-pound king and unbeaten champion Floyd Mayweather has started attacking future foe Manny Pacquiao again as he normally does every time he promotes his fights. Last week, Mayweather could not resist entertaining questions from the press about Pacquiao while promoting his fight against Canelo Alvarez. “You guys [the media] built Pacquiao up to this level, and said he was better than Floyd Mayweather….you guys did. I’m not pointing a finger at no particular figure. I’m going to stay in my lane and I’m pretty sure that Pacquiao will stay in his lane,” Mayweather said last week. In the Texas segment of his press tour, Mayweather was asked by someone in the crowd why he is not fighting Pacquiao. Instead of ignoring the question as it had nothing to do with his fight with Alvarez, Mayweather said ?Pacquiao?s a has-been; his career is over. [Juan] Manuel Marquez is a legend. I commend him.? During his press tour with Victor Ortiz in 2011, Mayweather has was widely criticized for talking more about Pacquiao instead of his opponent. Ortiz must have heard enough of Mayweather’s constant talk about Pacquiao. He complained he was not given due respect because Mayweather was always talking about Pacquiao instead of himself as the opponent. In one situation in the Los Angeles segment of the tour, Ortiz confronted Mayweather and poked him in his chest as their respective teams pulled them apart. ?I?m tired of it,? said Ortiz, the then WBC champion, who defeated Andre Berto prior to the Mayweather fight. ?I do feel like I’m being disrespected. Everyone keeps talking about Pacquiao.” he added. Read more For many years, it has become a pattern for Mayweather to talk about Pacquiao whenever he promotes his own fight. Certainly there is nothing wrong with the mention of Pacquiao’s name as it is just his way of getting people interested in what he wants to say. Pacquiao has remained popular despite his two successive losses and by merely mentioning his name, Mayweather gets public attention to his upcoming fight as people listens as the interview shifts to Pacquiao. Mayweather has a creative marketing skill and he could be doing it to get people interested in his fight and to influence them to buy tickets.
