Last week, we had Floyd Mayweather Jr. blaming the media for the level that Manny Pacquiao rose to after boxing fans climbed aboard his rising starship, looking to take a ride to heights that few fighters have soared to in the sport and now we have another meteoric collision from the mouth of Mayweather.
“You guys [the media] built Pacquiao up to this level, and said he was better than Floyd Mayweather….you guys did. I’m not pointing a finger at no particular figure. I’m going to stay in my lane and I’m pretty sure that Pacquiao will stay in his lane,” Mayweather said last week.
Mayweather, who seems to have forgotten that this press tour is about facing a young, tough, undefeated champion in his own right, Canelo Alvarez, once again stepped on his anti-Pacquiao podium in San Antonio by announcing to the boxing public that.
“Manny Pacquiao is a has-been. His career is over.” Is the new attention getter from the champion.
To which Fred Sternburg spokeperson for Top Rank and Manny Pacquiao replied to 8CN;
?He needs to be more specific because Manny has many careers.
Manny is a philanthropist, a public servant, a television personality, a top sports box office attraction, and a popular endorsement personality. Oh…he’s also the Fighter of the Decade.?
In response to Mayweather?s assertion that the media was responsible for Pacquiao?s rise to his level of fame and fortune Sternburg replied;
?I guess boxing fans had nothing to do with it.?
One wonders if this constant talk of Pacquiao is for the pre promotion of a future Mayweather/ Pacquiao matchup or something more sinister.
Is this a classic case of transference?
