Undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. is planning to do five more fights before finally hanging up his gloves in 2015.
Manny Pacquiao is not part of the plan.
Mayweather recently cited two reasons why the fight with the Filipino boxing icon will no longer happen.
The reigning pound-for-pound champion has hooked up with Showtime while Pacquiao and his promoter, Top Rank, has strong ties with HBO.
The rivalry between Showtime and HBO is perhaps just as fierce as the one between Top Rank and Golden Boy.
Then Mayweather mentioned the fact that Pacquiao just lost his last two fights, including a crushing knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December. Sportshub ( Article MRec ), pagematch: 1, sectionmatch: 1
?Manny Pacquiao has got a lot of hurdles to get over to get to me. He just got two back-to-back losses,? said Mayweather in an article that came out of Metro.co.uk.
?I tried to make the fight happen. Only thing I was asking for was random blood and urine testing just to show the world the sport of boxing is a clean sport,? he added.
Pacquiao had agreed to random drug testing and a smaller share of the purse, but still they can?t get it done.
Mayweather, undefeated in 43 fights, is scheduled to face Robert Guerrero on May 4 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
It will be his first fight this year, and based on recent history, it will also be his last for 2013.
Since coming out of retirement, Mayweather has only fought once a year ? against Marquez in 2009, Shane Mosley in 2010, Victor Ortiz in 2011 and Miguel Cotto in 2012.
Mayweather has been choosing his fights well. If he gets past Guerrero, there?s little chance that he will return to the ring the rest of the year.
But to get to five fights, Mayweather has to be more active in his last two years as a boxer.
Pacquiao, on the other hand, is in for a comeback fight in September, and so far there?s no opponent to be named although he?s looking at Marquez.
If he can?t get to Marquez, then his promoters might push for a rematch with Timothy Bradley or a fight with either Brandon Rios or Mike Alvarado.
