WORLD Boxing Organization (WBO) light flyweight champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes is asking for a rematch against WBO minimumweight titleholder Mexican Moses Fuentes three days after their 12-round title bout in Cebu was declared a majority draw.
Nietes, 30, said he was really surprised about the decision of the two judges despite the fact that the face of the 27-year-old Fuentes was swollen and bloodied after the match. Nietes also sustained a cut on his right eyebrow.
?It?s their decision and we can?t change it,? Nietes (31-1-4 win-loss-draw slate with 17 knockouts) told The Manila Times in a telephone interview on Monday. ?I really want a rematch to finally settle this. Everybody knows I?m the true winner.?
Filipino judge lawyer Danrex Tapdasan scored 115-113 for Nietes while the two American judges Adalaide Byrd and Pat Russell scored 114-114 hence the fight was declared a majority draw. With the decision, Nietes remained the WBO light flyweight champion.
?For me, I did my best and almost crushed my opponent into pieces but he?s a tough kid. I won?t allow it if ever we fight again,? added Nietes. ?So far, my manager hasn?t informed me of anything yet about the possible rematch but I like it to happen.?
Nietes said that he hit with solid punches in the first four rounds but admitted that he held back in the later rounds to save energy. He paid a costly price for giving Fuentes (16-1-1 record with eight KOs) a chance to recover.
The Fuentes camp announced they also want a rematch but on the condition that no Filipino judges would be present in the bout.
