When will you guys help to get HBO, and Showtime out of here? They keep selling awful fights. You should get NBC, ABC, and CBS back into boxing. There are old fans and new fans that deserve good, free fights, not this PPV rip offs.

I wish that I could help to push the networks to get away from that reality television garbage. How many times can they send a fat nanny to some house to tame the children? What about this trading wife nonsense? A little bit of advice for men thinking about going onto this program: If your wife is remotely attractive, stay away because they are going to send a porker your way. It happens every week. Okay?what was the question again? Oh yeah, boxing on network television.
I would love to see NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX run a weekly boxing program, but it is unlikely. The guys in charge are stuck in the Hollywood bubble, and instead of putting on decent programs, they just recycle the same garbage over and over again. The funny thing is that if they put on a boxing show and marketed it correctly, it would bring the sport back and get the ratings. Part of the reason why boxing isn’t the number one sport anymore is the lack of exposure. The champions usually defend their titles against unknowns because they are never seen on T.V. A great example was the bout between Lenord Pierre and Willie Gibbs that I covered from ringside. That was the fight of the year and one of the networks could have got a gem for a rock bottom price. Instead, they are locking a bunch of idiots in a basement for some reason in some other reality show that will make people puke in their shoes.
PPV rip offs are unfortunately part of life, but I am expecting more bouts on HBO and Showtime because the backlash has been strong. I will say that putting Antonio Tarver’s showdown with Bernard Hopkins has me second-guessing myself. If they will place a fifty-dollar price tag on this nonsense, maybe they’re not learning. Nobody gets shafted more than the boxing fan.

Everyone has their favorite fighters. Do you base it on purely skill, or do you factor in other qualities? My favorites are Emanuel Augustus, O’Neil Bell, Kassim Ouma, Joe Calzaghe, James Toney, Bernard Hopkins. As for Antonio Tarver: take the money and run…cause if you win, you fought a much smaller man, 42 years old. No glory there. If you lose…you’re done.

I definitely go on a variety of things. Emanuel Augustus is one of my favorites due to his skill and the fun factor that he brings to the ring. You also have to feel for him because he gets screwed over all of the time. I like “Big” George Foreman as one of my all time favorites because of his personality and his unbelievable comeback. Mike Tyson because of the persona and the fact that these seasoned boxers are beaten before they make it to the ring. I like the fighters that have that one punch power like DaVarryl Williamson, Thomas Hearns, Zab Judah, and the late and great Julian Letterlough.
I love fighters that take chances and take the fights that we want to see. Diego Corrales is the entire package. He takes on the best and has a huge punch. Same thing with the Pacman. So, it’s very hard to say why certain fighters are my favorites, but I love an underdog. Joey “Urban Fever” Ortega is a New England fighter with a, 2-16, record, but he still strolls to the ring with confidence and has the skill to pull and upset. I have respect for all fighters but there’s something special about a boxer facing his doom?fighting an unbeatable fighter and running to the ring to face it, like Buster Douglas did when he beat Mike Tyson.
I’m not a fan of overly cocky boxers like Roy Jones, JR. that find the need to rap, although I thought it was amusing when he fought Antonio Tarver the second time and he was rapping “Un-knockout-able,” which is ridiculous to begin with and he ended up?knocked out. Who the hell writes his music? Un-knockout-able? UN-KNOCKOUT-ABLE?!!! There’s something ridiculous about a guy trying to look like tough guy. RJJ is definitely tough, but the image is absurd.

Just to let you know, I don’t think that Byrd is shot or uninspired as you said in your article. He has been avoided by most fighters because of his skill. Now he looks like he is shot, but he is shot like a fox!

I had to use your subject title in your email: “Byrd and the Lamehammer.” It was amusing, so I went with it. I don’t think that Byrd is shot. I do think that he has been a disgruntled worker, like the rest of us. He is much like Tim Witherspoon was when he worked under Don King. How he goes into this fight mentally will probably determine the outcome. What people aren’t really figuring in is the fact that Wladimir’s weaknesses have been exposed. He is not durable and in the first Byrd-Klitschko bout, Wlad was an indestructible force. I have heard reports that Wlad isn’t training very well for this bout either, so I’m not ready to bet the house, farm, or anything else on “Dr. Steel hammer” to win. “Shot like a fox.” You actually said “Shot like a fox.” What the #@$#@% does that mean? I’ve heard “crazy like a fox,” but “Shot like a fox?” If somebody told me: “Geno, don’t fight him. He’s shot like a fox!” I would not know what to think, much like now. If you are a hunter and you are wearing those ridiculous camouflage pajamas or those orange jumpsuits to avoid being mistaken for a moose, and you shoot a fox, they are?DEAD. I’ve never heard of a fox surviving a gunshot wound. So, if Byrd is truly, “shot like a fox,” expect him to be carried to the ring.

Really enjoyed the interview and felt it showed what a dignified man Virgil Hill is, never any excuses given for losses. He also comes across as a true gentleman who views his career with intelligence and, quite rightly in my opinion, feels he doesn’t have to prove anything to anyone. I do wish he would call it a day though, I know how my body feels at forty-two and I wouldn’t want to be fighting a young champion who does have it all to prove!
The nature of the media is such that consistency is rarely rewarded whilst lesser figures receive greater attention due to flamboyance or due to a scarcity of contenders coming from a given country at the time, reasons other than ability.

Thanks for the props my friend. Virgil Hill is truly one of the good guys of the sport and he has never gone out of his way to create animosity with any of his opponents. It was great to interview him and I’m sure that it won’t be the last time. I noticed that you said that you know what being forty-two feels like and that you wouldn’t want to fight a young champion with something to prove. I’m thirty-one and I wouldn’t fight a young champion with something to prove, regardless. I can’t imagine being across the ring from a young and hungry boxer who tells me at the stare down that he has “something to prove.” I think that I would request the national anthem of every country before the fight started, and then I would most likely claim an injury and jump out of the ring and go home. Back in the day, my buddies used to say that they would fight Mike Tyson for the money. They may have a different perspective on the matter if Iron Mike was across the ring. I’m guessing they’d earn the nickname “no control of bodily functions.”

Do you really dislike De La Hoya that much? Jones, JR. would be far too big and probably couldn’t make it back to 160. I remember when people were pushing for Sugar Ray Leonard to move up or to fight Mike Tyson in a catch weight bout. Leonard wouldn’t have a chance and neither would De La Hoya. We have seen “The Golden Boy” at middleweight and he didn’t fight well. He looked chubby and lethargic and a bout with Jones, JR. would not be in his best interest. It’ll never happen. Let Jones, JR. fight Joe Calzaghe. That’s a decent bout.

When the hell will there be order in the heavyweight division? Toney was given a draw!!!! A GODDAMN draw!!!!!!! He didn’t take the fight seriously as evidenced by his physical appearance. Rahman did what he had to do, and deserved a first successful defense of his new title. I love Toney, but there was absolutely no way he could have gotten a draw. I feel sick. If Toney had taken the fight seriously, there would have been a different outcome (possibly). I have to give credit to Rahman for showing up (in shape) and going to work. I never had much of an opinion for Rahman because of that ONE magic punch that fateful night against Lewis, but then again, I never had much of an opinion of Lewis either.
Unfortunately, there was no other who could step up to the plate and take the belts. Lewis was the best we could do at the time. People may disagree with me, but I was watching boxing with my old man (bonding time for us) when the heavies were in a MUCH better state of affairs. Jerry Quarry, Big George (my all time favorite – both careers), “Smoking” Joe, Larry Holmes, The Greatest, etc? I miss those days. I always watch each fight, regardless of weight class, hoping to see a diamond. In the case of the heavies, I always get a mouthful of poop. – Pardon the expression. I miss the days of old and hope to see a change in the big boys’ division. Vitali was at least (when he was fighting, and not getting injured) getting the job done. I’m not one to dwell in the past, but I miss the days when the heavyweights were great. Sorry to ramble… I’m just a bit disconcerted.

James Toney’s appearance in that bout was disgraceful. I am a James Toney fan without question, and he would have won the title had he come into the bout fit. Rahman did win that fight. Lennox Lewis was a great heavyweight champion, in my opinion. Match him up against any of the all time greats. He may have had some cautious and non-exciting bouts, but he has avenged both losses and left the sport as the champion and with a win. Vitali Klitschko wasn’t really getting the job done. He wasn’t trying to clear out the division. He was looking for the least risk for the most money and never defeated an A level fighter.
I do wish that boxing would go back to what it once was. I want fifteen round bouts back with the John Ruiz exception, and boxing back on network television. The heavyweight division has potential?so I’m not ready to call it a mouthful of poop. Mouthful of poop? Okay, I will have to pardon the expression and try to forget about it. Also, don’t apologize for rambling. I’m a rambling man myself.

No way Rahman lost that fight. Toney did win a few rounds but his weight was the major problem. He looked sloppy and lost a fight he could have won. Rock did what he had to do but made no fans doing it. What do you think of the outcome and how in the heck does Oleg Maskaev get a shot at Rahman? Brock deserves one before him.

I might be in the minority that is looking forward to Oleg Maskaev challenging for the heavyweight title, especially considering the fact that he’s facing Hasim Rahman, a man that he knocked out in the past. Maskaev has ten straight wins, eight of them by knockout and has a lot of skill. There is a lot of intrigue in a rematch, I think and I can’t wait to see it. As for Brock deserving a title shot?why? He defeated Jameel McCline and then froze the ball. He is not looking to step up the competition to prove that he is the best, which tells me that his camp is hiding a secret. They are maneuvering him into a title shot with victories over sub-par opposition. If he beats a guy like Samuel Peter, Sultan Ibragimov, Danny Williams, John Ruiz, he can justify a title shot, but a win over David Bostice and Zuri Lawrence prove nothing.

He didn’t look great but I thought he beat Toney. Toney was far too heavy and had he come in around 217 which I think he weighed for the Holyfield fight, he would have done a lot more. Sure he can take a punch but that doesn’t always win fights.
Do you think he should lost about 40 LBS and go back down to the cruiserweight division? I would like to see him in there with Bell, Mormeck, and the others.
On another note, did you hear that William Guthrie is fighting again? Do you think he has a chance to be a Champion again?

Do you give Zab any chance against Floyd? What type of game plan must he employ to beat Floyd? If Zab does lose, do you think he will quit? And when Floyd does win, what is the next megafight for him? I think it’s against Hatton.

Not only do I give Zab a chance, but I am picking him to win it. To beat Floyd, he has to bring his best and look to catch Floyd with that straight left hand. He cannot wait on the outside all night because PBF will pick him apart. Zab will have to gamble in this bout and look for exchanges and use his superior speed to land his knockout punches. If PBF wins as most expect, Hatton would be a good match should he get beyond the tough and capable Luis Collazo, or maybe Miguel Angel Cotto, or Kostya Tszyu should he return. The bout that I would really push for is the winner of this bout between Judah and Mayweather JR. to face Antonio Margarito.
One final comment about this upcoming bout: Many of the “experts” have panned this bout, but I consider Judah-PBF one of the best bouts of the last five years to be made. I am extremely excited about this match and I expect huge things. You have two of the best pound for pound fighters going at it in their prime. PBF is facing the man that has the best chance to beat him and that should get the boxing fans excited. Throw out the Baldomir bout. It’s actually going to give us a better fight because Judah’s back is against the wall without question. He is going to fight this fight like it was his last and you are going to be glued to the screen?I guarantee it.

Best heavyweight pound for pound? Let me automatically disqualify Butterbean. I just can’t calculate all of those pounds. I saw some pictures from his last fight?he was HUMUNGOUS! The best big man in the game right now is Lamon Brewster, in my opinion. He scored impressive wins over Wladimir Klitschko, Luan Krasniqi, and Andrew Golota. He is a tough, power-puncher, with a great chin and ambition. As far as middleweights go, we will probably get our answer when Jermain Taylor faces Winky Wright. I am leaning toward Taylor, but we have a new force on the scene by the name of Edison Miranda that just scored a knockout over Howard Eastman. He is a man to watch.

Christy Martin was out-sized, over-matched, and past her prime. Ali picked up a win over a name, not an actual threat. I thought that it was ridiculous that Ali kicked Martin when she was down. I really don’t like Ali’s attitude. Her ego is out of control and she is really milking the name for all it’s worth. I would like to see Ali get in there with Anne Wolfe?a girl her own size with a punch and some ambition. Women’s boxing has a tough time getting established and it’s not taken too seriously by boxing fans. I enjoy it to a certain extent, but when you get two women in there that are slappers and really don’t know what they’re doing, it’s pretty bad. It’s like Butterbean. What areas should Pac work on after seeing the EM fight? Every one is all praises for Pac after that sensational victory and rightfully so. But I’m sure there are still areas for improvement for him to become an even better fighter. The first time I saw him fight, I was dazzled by his gung-ho fighting style and rapid combos, but I thought his defense and footwork were suspect. He has improved a lot on his defense and footwork through the years and it was evident in the Morales fight but I think his foot work still has a lot of room improvement. What do you think? I agree that his footwork and balance could use some improvement, but he is such a force in there that he compensates for it with his power and timing. The Pacman has perfect timing and power to go with it. He can be out-boxed if somebody can keep him away by boxing him and counter when he’s off balance, but most boxers will need to fight a perfect fight in order to beat him. So, the footwork and timing and perhaps some more body shots would help, but he is one of the best in the game and he’s knocking off all of the toughest in the game. He is knocking them out! It’s an unbelievable run that he’s having.

I would like to see Erik Morales to hang the gloves up and leave the sport. He’s not going to beat Pacman in the third bout, I don’t think, and is risking his health. He’s had a good run of it, but it’s time to go. MAB is the match that I would like to see. There are some questions going into that rematch and many believe that MAB underestimated Pacman/had a bad night/wasn’t himself/was his twin brother in the ring, and that’s why he lost. If he was focused, he’d win, they contend. So, to answer all questions, let those two duke it out.

Juarez is bringing youth and ambition into his fight with MAB, but contrary to his KO rate, I do not consider him a big puncher and a real threat to Barrera. I definitely pick MAB to win in six or seven rounds. If Juarez proves me wrong, a bout with Pacman would be a super fight, but not on the level of MAB, for sure. More power to you as well!

I am a PACMAN fan, and I have a great respect to human rights. It is not right and proper to say all the negative comments to MAB. In the first place he gave the much needed break for our PACMAN. The promoters who handle these two boxers must raise the much needed money to realize and materialize this fight for the sake of the unending patronization of mankind to this sports. Boxing Managers and Promoters must be responsible enough to stage a deserving fights for the people because the people are the one paying, they must enjoy the fight they watch worth of their hard earned money.

I have nothing but respect for Barrera, but every fighter has that one guy that they cannot beat and I don’t think that MAB is in any rush to face the Pacman. MAB and EM are playing games with the Pacman. First, EM demanded a rubber match at 132lb. For me this is just a ploy of EM for he knows so well that this is not acceptable to Pacman. This is EM’s way of saying NO to the rubber match. Second, MAB all of the sudden pops up and challenged Pacman to a rematch. His challenge came in at a time when Pacman keeps himself busy for his mid-year fight with Larios and his rubber match with EM this September. If MAB really wants to avenge his loss to Pacman he could have just stood by his word of challenging the winner of EM-PAC II immediately. Well, he did not and after what he saw what Pacman did to EM he instead booked himself to fight Juarez, which incidentally didn’t materialize either.

For Manny Pacquiao, he wants to fight against the best in his division without thinking of the championship belt and the money. He wants to show to the world that he never ducks anybody since he is a real warrior. Most boxers fight those that they can easily defeat and duck those that poised dangers to their champioship belt or ratings.

Pacman is a true warrior and does take on the best in the division. He is such an exciting boxer that you can’t help but to watch his bouts. I know that money figures into all his decision as it does with all boxers, but you can’t argue the facts. He defeated MAB, EM, and JMM (in my opinion) decisively. Nobody else can say that.

As I have observed on Pacman-Morales II, I never seen Pacman’s foot speed that he used against MAB, JMM, and Morales I, what do you think Geno? It seems like the Pac-Morales II is a technical fight for me.

I don’t think that his style really differed from his bouts with MAB and JMM. I thought that he was more active and stuck with the game plan, focusing on a body attack. Pacman’s footwork is one of his weak points, and in the rematch with Morales, I didn’t think that it was any better or worse than usual.

Barrera has offered Team Pacquiao a November 2006 dance. The only way this can happen is if Erik decides to cancel or delay his 130 lbs rematch against Manny in September.
For Eriks sake I hope he does delay. Why? Erik needs to have a good rest then a competitive tune-up fight at 130lbs before taking on the Pacman again. It would also be safer for Erik to see if MAB can soften Pacman up first.

I would like to see MAB step in. Morales should take a couple of confidence building fights before he steps back into the lion’s den. If MAB can produce a competitive war and put some pain on the Pacman, EM could step in there and maybe eke out a decision in their third encounter against a lethargic Pacman. So, it would be a good idea for EM to step back and wait for MAB to take his shot.

When I say I’m a MAB fan it will be an understatement. Pac is not a good puncher like MAB. Yes, I can agree he is a powerful puncher but not that accurate. I can still remember how JMM trash him away from winning after being decked 3 times on the very first round. It is because Pacquiao doesn’t know how to cut the ring and finishing a world rated fighter is not included in his repertoire.
MAB already know what to do the second time around they’ll meet Pac. I have a lot of trust on MAB. PAC is a one dimensional fighter who relied only on his left hand power punch that can KO any world class fighter like Morales and Barrera. But believe me Geno, MAB can handle Pac on their rematch.
And please stop on commenting that Barrera is evading that Philipino fighter because for me MAB is the best in the Featherweight today with TWO BIG BELTS wherein Pac doesn’t even have one and can never be. Mexican warriors are no COWARDs like what you think Geno.

Mexican warriors are no cowards like you think. Hmm?I have never questioned MAB’s guts because he has proven his heart in the ring, but in all actuality, he is making a business decision. He is fighting opponents that really don’t have the best chance to beat him instead of the Pacman. He can make the same money and save face by fighting relatively safe opponents. I have nothing against any ethnicity and I certainly don’t take one group and say “these people can’t fight.” I know that you are supporting your countryman and you are probably the most objective person in the world, so I take what you’ve said with a grain of salt.
