ALA Boys manager and Cebu’s boxing godfather Antonio Lopez Aldeguer is baffled how his fast-rising boxer, Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista, got into the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao vs. Oscar Larios July 2 fight without his knowledge.
Reports said the youthful Candijay-Bohol native is set to trade punches with Mexican Alejandro Felix Montiel for 10 rounds at the Araneta Coliseum. Boxing records website www.boxrec.com also added the July 2 fight between Bautista and Montiel in its record.
“I really don’t know about it. I heard about that last night (Wednesday) when it was announced in TV Patrol,” Aldeguer said in his text message to Sun.Star Cebu.
Aldeguer explained that he likes the way his boy is getting the media mileage, but what he doesn’t approve of is the way things are going around without his knowledge.

“It’s an honor to fight in the undercard of Pacquiao and I’m very willing to have Rey fight in that card. Back in the US, I was asked by Freddie Roach and Manny to have Rey in the card but nothing is official yet. I don’t hear any negotiations (on Bautista). You see, the whole thing right now is done abroad,” said Aldeguer.
What Aldeguer doesn’t like is nobody talked with him about the fight.
“Up to now, nobody has directly talked to me about Rey fighting in Manny’s card. All I know is what I hear and what I read,’ said Aldeguer.
Since Bautista is under a promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar de la Hoya, Aldeguer said all he does is to approve the opponent of his fighter and nothing else.
“I don’t know who’s negotiating, but the announcement is not official. For sure Bautista vs. Montiel won’t happen. It’s a mismatch, Boom-Boom will be fighting a 37-year-old boxer who started during the time of Edito Villamor,” he said.
Montiel, a native of Los Mochis, Mexico, holds a 50-7 win-loss card, with 29 knockouts.
“Honestly, the July card is far from my mind because we have a May 20 fight to look into. We will just take the cue from there,” Aldeguer said.
