Pacquiao to appeal to govt to make fight card tax free

Manny Pacquiao is definitely fighting Oscar Larios on July 2 at the Araneta Coliseum, but the Filipino boxing icon is asking for something else to set the fight in stone.

“PacMan” will appeal to the government to make his fight with Larios tax free, as well as the rest of the bouts in the undercard of his first boxing promotion, so the Mexican fighters coming over don’t have to deal with double taxation on their meager purses.

The left-handed pride of General Santos City is concerned that the visiting boxers might think twice about crossing the Pacific if the RP government would tax their purses, according to one of Pacquiao’s business managers, who requested anonymity.

Besides the levies in the Philippines, the boxers would also be taxed when they return to Mexico. Add the usual “cuts” of the fighters’ promoters, managers and trainers, and that would reduce their net earnings to just 10 percent of their original purses, the Pacquiao camp source told Sports Times on Friday.

Larios is coming over on April 27 to promote his bout with “The People’s Champion” after the Mexican’s handlers, particularly Richard Schaefer, president of Golden Boy Promotions, signed the fight contract on April 2.
